明洪武二年（1369年）金吾卫镇抚孔显知邓，招抚流民，命军千人、民1700户筑城周长2094米，高6.7米，基高7米，池深5米；洪武六年，建门楼四座，为砖城辟四门，东门：“振武”（后改为迎旭）；南门：“拱阳”；西门：“平城”；北门无名，为防湍河水浸城，常封闭。城上设角四角楼、炮台四处，瓮城小楼3座，窝铺33处，女儿墙1391处，并有护城河；三门各架池桥。
