Water-Splashing Festival
The name of the festival, whether it's called Songkran in Thailand or Thingyan in Myanmar, is derived from the Sanskrit word sankranti, referring to the shift of the sun's movement.
The day when the sun moves from Pisces into Aries in the zodiac, or the last day of the old year, marks the beginning of the festival. The second day of the festival, or sometimes together with the third day, constitutes transitional day(s) between the old year and the new year. And the new year arrives on the last day.
The first day of the festival is traditionally marked with spring cleaning and a water pouring ceremony. During this, scented water is poured onto sacred Buddha images in temples. This symbolically represents purification - or the washing away of the previous year to welcome the New Year.
On the second day, young people pay respect to their elders by pouring scented water over their hands and feet in return for blessings and floral garlands, and offerings are made to monks and temples.

Water-Splashing Festival
For many Thais, particularly the older generations, the original meaning of Songkran has been lost and the festival has become commercialised and boisterous. Respectfully sprinkling small amounts of water on monks, friends and family has given way to what is promoted as the world’s wildest water fight.

Authorities in Thailand are telling women to avoid dressing in ‘sexy’ outfits as they try to prevent sexual harassment or sex assault cases during the Songkran festival.
她们发起了一个“别告诉我穿什么”(don't tell me how to dress)的运动,来对抗泰国政府的建议。
Using the hashtag #DontTellMeHowToDress, women have told how they were groped and harassed at Songkran in previous years.
“This is the first time women are saying enough is enough,” said Thai-American model and TV host Cindy Bishop, who started the #DontTellMeHowToDress campaign.
“Modest clothing doesn’t protect women from sexual assault,” a Thai woman posted on Twitter with the hashtag, which has gone viral in Thailand.
“These things need to be stopped,” another Twitter user wrote, saying a reveler once fired at her breasts with a watergun.
Bishop said she was assaulted by a group of men at Songkran celebrations when she was a teenage girl over two decades ago.“They basically put their hands all over me,” said the 39-year-old, who has hosted the reality TV show Asia’s Next Top Model.
“It has become such a problem because it’s hard to point fingers. It’s hard in that situation when everyone is having a good time,” she said, urging authorities to step up enforcement and issue warnings to revelers against sexual harassment.

Water-Splashing Festival
Excessive alcohol intake, rather than the odd watered-down beer, has long been the biggest challenge facing the police over the holiday. Despite countless safety campaigns, road accidents soar during the annual “seven dangerous days”.
Drink-driving contributed to more than 60 per cent of the casualties reported, with motorcycles and pickup trucks involved in the vast majority of incidents.
Infections continue to be an issue – that brown Chiang Mai moat water is of dubious quality, so protect your eyes and avoid swallowing water.Tourists often suffer stomach problems after Songkran because buckets and water guns are filled from unfiltered sources.
In addition, frequent changes in body temperature caused by overexerting at the hottest time of year, as well as being doused with buckets of iced water, result in an April epidemic of colds and flu. Pneumonia is not unheard of.
