小托马斯·米基利去世几十年后，地质学家检测到大气中含有大量铅。当时，地球大气中90%以上的铅来自汽车尾气。四乙基铅的丑闻终于公之于众。而米基利的另一项发明——氟利昂也被证明对大气层有着极其巨大的影响。臭氧层被释放到空气中的大气层严重破坏，导致温室效应加剧。直到80年代后期才禁止使用含铅汽油。1996年，氟利昂的应用程序被全面禁止。
