1955年“兵团司令员”一共19位，2位大将(第二与第四兵团)和17位上将。值得一提的是第十八兵团，第一任司令员是徐向前元帅，第二任司令员才是周士第上将。所以如果说第二兵团和第四兵团是“大将兵团”的话，那么第十八兵团就是“元帅兵团”。
