Many Chinese consumers didn't expect that they could learn English while going shopping online, but the recent popular live-streaming by New Oriental proves otherwise.

The bilingual hosts, provided by the live commerce platform Oriental Selection owned by the New Oriental Education, has recently gained popularity with more than 1.3 million fans participating in three days, making live-streaming with cultural connotations a trend in China.

The unexpected big hit of the education giant’s live studio has also sent its stock prices through the roof. The Hong Kong-traded New Oriental Online once jumped 40 percent last Friday, and continued to climb another 40 percent on Monday, gaining more than 230 percent in the past eight trading days.

Dong Yuhui, one of the teachers at New Oriental, became the latest icon on popular short-video platform Douyin. The number of people tuned in the studio once reached 108,000 on Friday, with sales hitting 15.34 million yuan, nearly three times compared with the first broadcast.

In the studio, anchors like Dong introduce products in both Chinese and English. For example, when Dong sells peaches, he also introduces the English word "peach", along with its usage in a phrase and its derivative “peachy.” Using this method, Dong sold more than 6,700 peaches in just a few minutes.

Such a method of teaching English and selling goods at the same time soon attracted the attention of young people. The audience left messages in the comment section, saying it appeared to have sent them back to class at New Oriental.

Yu Minhong, the company's founder, also appeared in the studio, selling products with the teachers or hosts. So far, the studio has garnered about 2.5 million followers.

On the evening of December 28, 2021, Yu conducted the first live broadcast of agricultural products on Douyin. But it was not until last week when Yu started bilingual live-streaming that set his studio “on fire”.

Talking about selling products in two languages, Yu said that this is a very important transformation for New Oriental. "They have changed from being teachers to being live-streaming hosts, which has attracted public attention and recognition, all thanks to consumers' tolerance and support," Yu said.

New Oriental Education and Technology Group, which was one of China's largest private education providers, dismissed tens of thousands of employees last year after an educational reform policy called "double reduction" drastically cut classes and fees and ordered such institutions to turn into nonprofits.

昔日课堂名师“双语带货”火出圈，3天涨粉超130万，新东方在线股价一度飙升100%。

近日，新东方旗下的直播间“东方甄选”爆火，3天内涨粉130万。周一上午，全市场最火的股票非新东方在线莫属。该股上午最大涨幅一度达到100%，本月至今8个交易日累计涨幅超230%。今天新东方-S也收涨超13%。

6月10日下午，“东方甄选”直播间引发关注。在直播间里，英语老师董宇辉正在用中英双语介绍产品，同时进行英语教学，人气大增。评论区的观众纷纷留言，“梦回新东方上课日常”“从来没想过能在直播间学英语”。

据第三方直播数据统计平台灰豚数据显示，东方甄选直播间10日晚间直播峰值人数达到10.8万，直播销量19.8万件，直播销售总额达到1534.3万元，相较首播成绩翻了近三倍。

新东方的直播带货起于去年年底。2021年，新东方遭遇诸多变故，受政策、疫情等影响，公司很多业务处于不确定性中。2021年12月28日晚，俞敏洪在抖音进行了首场农产品带货直播。俞敏洪在采访中直言，面对行业巨变，他对团队的人说，“这也许是老天给我们的，另一次更大的创业，取得更多辉煌的机会。”

在转型直播带货初期，“东方甄选”并未实际“出圈”，直至上周俞敏洪组建了“新东方直播间”队伍，这才把“双语带货”推向热点。对于直播带货，俞敏洪表示，直播经济是商业的第三次革命。第一次是大卖场，第二次是电商，第三次就是直播带货。

对于新东方的发展，中信证券表示，新东方原先就有较强的留学和大学生培训业务，未来有望继续保持优势。积极探索智能硬件、教育信息化、直播带货等新方向，也有助于其未来发展。

• As of Sunday, China had finished reaping winter wheat on 239 million mu (15.93 million hectares) of farmland, accounting for around 78.5 percent of its total winter wheat, 1.2 percentage points faster than the previous year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

  全国小麦收获近八成：据农业农村部最新小麦机收进度显示，截至12日，全国已收获小麦面积2.39亿亩，收获进度78.5%，比去年快约1.2个百分点。

• Hong Kong will launch a second round of vouchers this summer, consisting of HK$5,000 per person in the latest move to shore up consumption, Paul Chan, financial secretary of the Hong Kong SAR, said on Sunday.

  香港将发放第二批消费券：香港特区政府财政司司长陈茂波12日称，今年第二批5000港元电子消费券将在暑假发放，有望为这个传统黄金消费档期带来更大的助力。

• Various economic indicators in the Yangtze River Delta have rebounded after policies aiming to stabilize the economy and speed up the resumption of work and production. As of Sunday, 96 percent of the 9,472 industrial enterprises in Shanghai have resumed work, and 69 percent of these firms have resumed production, up nearly 20 percent from a week earlier, latest data from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information showed.

  长三角经济加速复苏：随着国家一系列稳经济政策和复工复产各项措施加快落地，长三角地区多项经济指标恢复向好，经济运行复苏态势明显。上海市经信委的最新统计显示，截至目前，上海9472家规模以上工业企业复工率超过96%，复产率达到69%，比一周前上升近20%。

• Beijing and Shanghai both resumed mass testing for Covid-19 as new community outbreaks of the virus emerged. The bulk of bars in Beijing were closed again as of Thursday amid increasing cases related a bar cluster, which spilled over to other districts of the city. Beijing had reported a total of 183 infections related to the bar outbreak as of midnight Sunday. Universal Studio’s theme park in Beijing has also canceled its plan to reopen on June 15.

• Chinese short video platforms Douyin and Kuaishou have taken swift action to shut down social media accounts involved in spreading or publishing extreme and improper content related to the outburst of violence against women at a barbecue restaurant in Tangshan, North China's Hebei Province. Douyin said on Sunday that it had banned 61 accounts for making inappropriate remarks toward the victims of the Tangshan violent assault. Kuaishou has dealt with a total of 1,442 illegal videos, 1,130 comments, and 37 illegal accounts.

  抖音快手处理“唐山打人案”违规账号：6月12日，就“唐山烧烤店打人事件”中部分账号存在仿冒账号、发布不当内容等，抖音、快手公布了处理结果。对受害者发表不负责任的观点，抖音对61个存在不当言论的帐号，分别给予封禁、禁播、禁言等处罚。此外，快手平台已通过技术手段等方式对仿冒账号进行核查，并根据违规情况对相关账号做出了帐号永久封禁等处罚，目前共处理违规视频1442条，评论1130条，违规帐号37个。

• A total of 40 Chinese mobile game developers found their places in the top 100 global game publishers' revenue list in May, according to the mobile app data analysis firm Sensor Tower. These Chinese companies raked in a total of 2.3 billion U.S. dollars last month, accounting for 43 percent of the revenue generated by the 100 firms, the data showed. Tencent ranked first among all Chinese mobile game publishers by revenue, followed by NetEase and miHoYo.

  5月40家中国游戏商吸金23亿美元：6月10日，Sensor Tower发布数据显示，5月份共有40家中国厂商冲进了全球手游发行商收入榜Top100。40家厂商合计吸金超过23亿美元，占全球Top100手游发行商收入近43%。5月中国手游发行商收入Top30中，腾讯、网易、米哈游稳坐前三的位置。

• Chinese entrepreneur and internet celebrity Luo Yonghao announced he was quitting all social platforms on his Weibo account on Sunday midnight. He said that he would devote himself to a new round of entrepreneurship from Monday and use a new Weibo account "Product Manager Luo Yonghao" for communication only professional concern.

  罗永浩宣布“退网”：6月12日晚间，罗永浩发布微博称，将再次埋头创业，并退出所有社交平台。据悉，罗永浩未来几年原则上不会再接受媒体采访，他希望排除外界干扰，“埋头从事下一代智能平台产品的研发”。同时，罗永浩个人新开“产品经理罗永浩”的微博，仅限业务相关的交流。

金融市场要闻

• Locked shares from 61 companies will become eligible for trade on China's bourses this week. Based on the closing prices of Friday, these shares are worth 40.48 billion yuan, according to data from financial information provider Wind.

  本周限售股解禁市值逾400亿：Wind统计显示，本周共有61家公司限售股陆续解禁，合计实际解禁量26.5亿股，按6月10日收盘价计算，解禁市值为404.8亿元。

• China's new yuan-denominated loans totaled 1.89 trillion yuan in May, central bank data showed Friday. Newly added social financing came in at 2.79 trillion yuan last month, representing an increase of 840 billion yuan from the same period last year. The M2, a broad measure of money supply that covers cash in circulation and all deposits, increased 11.1 percent year on year to 253 trillion yuan at the end of last month. Friday's data also showed China's new yuan deposits in May reached 3.04 trillion yuan, up 475 billion yuan from a year earlier.

  5月金融数据回暖：中国人民银行6月10日公布的数据显示，5月新增人民币贷款1.89万亿元，社会融资规模新增2.79万亿元，比上年同期多8399亿元。M2同比增长11.1%，人民币存款增加3.04万亿元，同比多增4750亿元。

• Chinese stocks closed down on Monday as COVID-19 uncertainties sparked worries of fresh outbreaks and lockdowns. The benchmark Shanghai Composite slipped 0.89 percent and the Shenzhen Component edged down 0.3 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 3.39 percent and the TECH index closed 4.72 percent lower.

  周一A股集体走弱。截止收盘，沪指跌0.89%，深成指跌0.3%，创业板指跌0.39%。两市成交额10907亿元，较上一交易日放量403亿元。板块方面，汽车整车、贵金属等板块涨幅居前，房地产开发、银行等板块跌幅居前。港股恒生指数收跌3.39%，恒生科技指数收跌4.72%，科技股领跌。
