结构分析
这个句子是由 and 连接的两个简单句构成的。前一个句子的主干是 the role ... was formulated。the role 由 of ... 和 in ... 两个介词短语修饰。only a little ... ago 是时间状语，汉语中的位置是主句之前或谓语动词之前。后一个句子的主语是 the role of ...，谓语是 is ... beginning to be。后一个句子的主语 role 由形容词 selective 和 of the environment in ... individual 修饰，in ... 表示“在...方面”。shaping 和 maintaining 两个动名词的宾语都是 the behavior of the individual。两个分句都是被动语态。
