Strike out:
I'm striking out on finding a gift for my wife. I'll need to go to the shops again tomorrow.
我没能成功给我的妻子找到合适的礼物，明天我还得去店里看看。
I stuck out but at least I went down swinging. (at least I tried).
我失败了，但至少我努力尝试过。

A ballpark figure/number:

Play hardball:
I need to play hardball to get a good price.

Throw a curveball:
