斗鸡是中国古老的鸡种，据1988年出版的《中国家禽品种志》标记，吐鲁番斗鸡和中原斗鸡、漳州斗鸡、西双版纳斗鸡并称为“中国四大斗鸡”，被列入国家和新疆家禽资源保护名录。
吐鲁番的斗鸡具备身材剽悍，双腿健壮，脖颈俊秀，目光犀利，凶猛顽强等基本特征，骁勇善战闻名国内外。
