宣纸的制作工艺比较复杂，其中浆料上帘时，贴帘的一面会有纹路，另一面则为光滑的，这样就形成宣纸一面是光面，一面是涩面，也就是俗称的正反面。
实际使用时不分哪面是正哪面是反，看实际需要，如果需要流畅的线条，如写行书、草书，可用光面，如想要顿涩的感觉，则可用涩面，如写隶书，最好是使用涩面。
宣纸根据质量不同，有的光面涩面分得很清楚，有的分的是不太明显。
