土元主要是靠胸部进行运动。各节腹面有1对具有若干毛刺的足，主要起攀爬行走的作用，胸部有3对较发达且有力的足，善于奔跑。除金边地鳖虫外，大多数雄性土元成虫都有两对翅膀，能飞，但不善飞行，其活动主要以爬行为主；雌性土鳖成虫一般无翅膀，其活动只能爬行。
