英语趣闻精选七：美国梦可能没有你想象的那么好！

英语没有捷径，

就像饭要一口一口地吃，

问心无愧的功夫要一点一点地下。

“美国梦”是美国价值观（national ethos）的缩影，按照美国作家和历史学家James Truslow Adams1931年的说法：“life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.”，简而言之就是“以能力论输赢，不论出身。”好莱坞动作巨星施瓦辛格的人生历程就是这个“美国梦”的真实写照：以健身起家，成功获得“世界健美先生”称号，进入好莱坞成为动作巨星，娶到肯尼迪家族的千金，成为美国“皇室”一员，最终成功竞选为佛罗里达州州长，直到现在他的口音还有着浓浓的德语味儿（so what？！）。

更不用提目前的美国第一夫人梅拉尼娅·特朗普啦！

美国因此也被称为“机会的天堂”（the Land of Opportunity），“人人都有机会成为总统”（if you want, you can be the President）的说法也不足为奇（看看小布什和川普就知道啦）。

然而，任何事情都不会只是像它表面的样子——美国作家Steven Brill在他的新书《Tailspin*: The People and Forces Behind America's Fifty-Year Fall--and Those Fighting to Reverse It》中，通过对美国在过去五十年走过的“下坡路”进行深刻反省，给大家津津乐道的“美国梦”做了一场大解剖（autopsy）。在书中，他指出：

Over the past 50 years, lots of things have changed in the United States. Here are a few examples.
1) A child’s chance of earning more than his or her parents has plummeted from 90 to 50 percent.
2) Earnings by the top 1 percent of Americans nearly tripled, while middle-class wages have been basically frozen for four decades, adjusting for inflation.
3.) Self-inflicted deaths — from opioid use and other drug addictions — are at record highs.
4) Nearly one in five children in the US are now at risk of going hungry.
5) Among the 35 richest countries in the world, the US now has the highest infant mortality rate and the lowest life expectancy.

也就是说，

在过去的50年里，美国发生了很大的变化。举例来说：
1. 子女比父母收入高的概率从90%下降到50%；
2. 对于美国仅占总人口1%的最富裕人群来说，他们的收入翻了将近三番，而中产阶级的收入在过去的40年里基本停滞不前；
3. “自作孽不可活”类死亡——从鸦片类药物到其他的毒瘾——史上最高；
4. 大约每5个孩子中就有1个面临饥饿的威胁；
5. 在35个世界最富裕的国家中，美国的婴儿死亡率最高，平均寿命最低。

是不是和大家的想象很不一致？我的美国朋友的评论是：“sad, but true.”

基于详尽的分析和总结，Steven Brill得出结论：

The people with the most advantages in the American economy have used that privilege to catapult* themselves ahead of everyone else, and then rigged* the system — to cement* their position at the top, and leave the less fortunate behind.

也就是说，

在美国经济中，最有优势的群体利用自己的特权将自己“弹射”到其他人前面，并且操纵了整个社会——从而巩固自己的“顶层”地位，远远地把其他（不够幸运的）人甩在后面。

tailspin：愿原意是指飞机的尾旋，这里指的是“to take or experience a sudden and dramatic downturn”，就是说形势像“飞机旋尾降落”那样急转直下。

catapult：原意是指投石器，这里指的是“to thrust or move quickly or suddenly”，就是说像“投石器”那样加速把自己“弹射”出去。

rig：意思是“to manipulate fradulently”，也就是通过欺诈等手段进行操纵。

cement：原意是“水泥”，这里指的是“to reinforce or consolidate”，也就是把自己的“顶层”地位巩固地像“水泥”一样。

社会奇妙如斯。
