Describing Hong Kong as a "super-connector," Ko Pui-shuen, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairwoman of Kingrich Asia Holdings Limited, said the city should recognize the very good opportunities presented as the mainland strives for various important causes such as the internationalization of the renminbi and the Belt and Road Initiative.
"The development of the mainland is bound to drive the development of Hong Kong," said Ko, a veteran business leader in Hong Kong.
Ko explained that Hong Kong's special status as a global super-connector gives it a unique advantage in international business and currency exchange. The "one country, two systems" policy is particularly apt for leveraging Hong Kong's strengths, enabling it to maintain its role at the forefront of opening-up and contribute positively under the framework.
The political advisor stated that Hong Kong residents are now very clear that integrating into the overall national development is the best way forward and offers hope for development. At present, they are actively incorporating the Northern Metropolis project together with Shenzhen. It is expected that through cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and integration into the overall national development, the city's economy can be improved and high-quality development achieved.
"Economic enhancement and boosting confidence are crucial at this time," Ko said. "So, I think having the Northern Metropolis as a project included in our development plan, which involves trillions of yuan in investment, is significant. Given that Hong Kong's original construction capability and labor manpower are not quite sufficient, we hope the central government can support the development of Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis. This can boost confidence and stimulate the economy, which is undoubtedly a very positive development momentum for the city."
She also mentioned that over the past five years, Shenzhen has been at the forefront of development, with approximately 400 high-tech companies established in total, along with dozens of technology R&D centers, and international top 500 technology companies. Its current development trend has been helping Hong Kong advance. "People in Hong Kong are now working very hard trying to do a good job in the economy, hoping to contribute to national development by collaborating with other cities in the GBA and achieving high-quality development."
Ko also presented her proposals at the second session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, which is being held from March 4-10 in Beijing.
