This morning I was standing at a crossroads in the old part of Liangzhou, waiting for the light to change, and it hit me how much of our everyday English about getting around sounds like a phrasebook. We say "I go to work by bus" and that is fine, but natives reach for smaller, rounder words. They catch the bus or hop on the metro. They run late instead of "am very late". These tiny choices are what I have been chasing this week: not bigger words, just truer ones.
嗯,catch the bus 这个搭配,我以前一直说 take the bus,后来才发觉 native 更爱用 catch。
When the road is packed, the honest English is heavy traffic, or if it is truly stuck, a snarl-up. I used to say "the traffic is very big", which is pure textbook Chinese dressed in English clothes. The fix is small: swap big for heavy. That one word does the work of a whole sentence.
My favourite find this week is off-peak. To travel off-peak is to move when the crowd has thinned. It is one of those phrases that sounds natural the moment you say it, and an examiner can tell you are not reciting a template.
收尾一句:a city is just a set of habits about how people move, and English gives us sharper words for those habits than we think.
The biggest leak in my 地道 score is not grammar right or wrong, but collocation. In Chinese we say “交通很大” or “开车很慢”, but English does not translate those literally. It reaches for a fixed set instead, and that set is what natives actually store. A few I drilled this week:
• catch the bus / miss the train — catch already carries the hurry, not just take.
• run late — simpler and more native than be late.
• make good time — the trip went smoothly, few hold-ups.
• wind down the window — not open the car window, which sounds like furniture.
• a quick spin — a short drive just to wander.
Get the collocation right and the whole sentence sounds alive; get it wrong and even a big word gives you away. 地道, as ever, hides in the small joints between words.
❌ 中式英语 the traffic is very big
✅ 地道表达 heavy traffic / the traffic was crawling
I go to school by walk
I walk to school / I go on foot
❌ 中式英语 open the car window
✅ 地道表达 wind down the window
I very like driving
I'm really into driving
❌ 中式英语 the car is very slow
✅ 地道表达 the traffic was moving at a snail's pace
• traffic jam → snarl-up / bottleneck
• crowded → chock-a-block / packed
• convenient → handy / within easy reach
• delay → hold-up / setback
• slowly → at a snail's pace
这些替换在口语里比原词更地道:snarl-up 形容堵死、chock-a-block 是挤爆、at a snail's pace 是龟速挪。

If you time it right, you can miss the worst of the rush.(最地道的一句"错峰"建议,避开千篇一律的 we should avoid traffic。)
例:If you time it right, you can miss the worst of the rush and roll in before the meeting.
旧句回扣:carpool(09-29 交通期学过,当时讲"拼车 halves the cars on the road")。 Carpooling is the easiest off-peak hack for a commuter.
1. catch the bus , 赶公交(比 take the bus 口语且带"赶"的劲)
2. travel off-peak , 错峰出行(比 avoid the busy time 地道十倍)
3. at a snail's pace ,
• lane:今日义"车道",如 the bus lane keeps commuters moving;另一常见义"泳道/小巷",如 swim in the next lane。
• fare:今日义"车费",如 a bus fare of one yuan;另一常见义"进展(动词)",如 how did you fare on the trip?(你这趟顺不顺利)。
• charge:今日义"拥堵费",如 a congestion charge;另一常见义"收费/指控/充电",如 charge your phone。
• express:今日义"快递/高速的",如 an expressway;另一常见义"表达",如 express your idea clearly。
• terminal:今日义"航站楼/终点站",如 the airport terminal;另一常见义"终端(设备)",如 a computer terminal。
注意:交通话题最容易踩的是 lane(泳道≠车道)、fare(车费≠进展)、charge(拥堵费≠充电),写作和口语里看清语境再取义,别张冠李戴。
The shape of a city decides how it moves
A city is, before anything else, a shape drawn on the ground, and that shape quietly decides how everyone inside it moves. Long before the car, the width of a gate and the bend of a wall already told people where they could walk and where they could not. Transport geography calls this accessibility: not distance in kilometres, but distance in time, cost and effort. A place may look close on a map yet feel far in real life, and a town with one good line can outrun a nearer one with none.
The word city itself reaches back to Latin civitas, a body of citizens; street comes from Latin strata, a paved layer, the roads the Romans laid straight. Grid, the criss-cross plan of so many modern downtowns, is Greek in origin, a grating that maps order onto movement. Even commute, from Latin mutare, to change, reminds us that travelling is simply exchanging one place for another, home for work and back.
And the question of how a place moves is one Liangzhou answered long before the car, in the curve of its old walls.
• fer- / ferian(运送):ferry, transfer, fertile(土地"产出"也是运送的一种)。
• ped- / pes(脚):pedestrian(09-17/09-29 用过), footbridge, expedition(远足)。
• trans-(横越):transit(09-17/09-29), transport, expressway(express + way,快快横越)。
• mutare(换):commute(09-23/09-29), mutate。
Today's topic is transport, so it is a good day to pull old words back through it. Spaced repetition works best as transfer, not as a list.
• 2026-09-29, transport. carpool and roundabout came back. I drilled their prepositions on the accurate dimension then; today, on the 地道 dimension, I pulled carpool into off-peak — one word, two lines met.
• 2026-10-01, health + transfer. derivative and integral moved into a health frame that day; today I used the same "old word, new scene" move on transit and carpool.
• 2026-09-26, maths. The bar chart recalled the data are (plural, native) and that a wide gap is just right-skewed by another name.
• 2026-10-02, maths. Today's percentages are not rates, and the sample is flagged as sample for a reason — that is the margin of error talking.
• 2026-09-18, work. I should catch myself before "the traffic is very big" slips out again — a blind spot from that run.

词根:ferian/trans-/express/foot/tail。
1. How do you usually get around your city?
2. What bugs you most about local transport?
3. If you could add one thing to your daily route, what would it be?
Focus word: expressway ɪkˈspresweɪ. My loose native-style guess runs something like "eks-press-way", but the strict RP is ɪkˈspresweɪ. Stress sits on ˈspres; the final way is the diphthong eɪ, not a short e. Between express and way there is a slight glide on the s-w join — say it twice and the rhythm comes. A small thing, but said right it sounds like you have actually heard the word spoken, not just read it.
Spanish of the day: Quien planea la ciudad, planea cómo se mueve la gente. "Whoever plans the city, plans how people move."

Write a report of at least 150 words in 20 minutes. Your report should include an overview and key features. Use percentages and make comparisons between cities.
1. Mumbai recorded the largest share of daily trips taken by public transport, at 63%, while Los Angeles had the smallest, at just 12%.
2. The bar chart ranks the seven cities from highest to lowest, with a clear gap between the three Asian cities and the two North American ones.
3. Los Angeles (12%) was roughly five times lower than Mumbai (63%), the widest gap in the chart.
• Overall: public transport's share of daily trips varied sharply, from a high of 63% in Mumbai to a low of 12% in Los Angeles.
• Detail: the three Asian cities (Mumbai, Beijing, Tokyo) all exceeded 45%, suggesting dense cores where transit is the norm; New York and Los Angeles lagged, reflecting car reliance.
• Conclusion: a commuter in Mumbai was about five times more likely to use transit than one in Los Angeles.
今天重点练两件事:排序与极值(rank/the highest/the lowest/top the chart)和极差与对比(range/the gap/N times higher/as...as)。
At the foot of 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), a peak of the Qilian range some thirteen kilometres from the old city, the old city of Liangzhou still keeps the outline of 姑臧卧龙城. The record in the Book of Jin says it ran seven li from south to north and three li from east to west, its ground shaped like a coiling dragon, and that shape, more than any road sign, decided where people could walk and where carts could turn.
A city's form is its first transport plan. The dragon-shaped walls set the gates, and the gates set the streets; you did not choose your route so much as inherit it. When I stand at a crossroads in the old town today and grumble about a jam, I am arguing with a layout that was already old when those walls went up. Movement was planned before paper maps existed, and the plan is still under my feet.
Liangzhou sat where routes met, a hub on the corridor linking the Central Plains with the far west, and the same geography that let goods flow also forced the city to think about its streets. The old lanes the walls left behind are the bones; the new expressway and the rail line laid beside them are the muscles. Both answer one question: how does a place move, and who gets left behind?
From 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) you see it. The dragon-shaped walls are gone, but the curve they drew still guides the bus routes and the morning crowd. Transport is never only about vehicles. It is about how a place chooses to spend its time, and Liangzhou has been answering that question for nearly two thousand years.
Modern Liangzhou has laid a softer rule on top of those old bones. The city runs a campaign people here sum up as 车让人、人快走 — drivers ease off and stop at the zebra crossing, and walkers cross promptly instead of dawdling in the road. Cameras at the crossings catch drivers who fail to yield, and the penalty is a hundred yuan with three points on the licence; some streets are watched around the clock, and repeat offenders are named in public as a warning. To an IELTS eye this is gold: it lets me describe a real home rule in English instead of inventing a generic one. A place that has been planning how people move for two thousand years is now teaching its drivers the same lesson the dragon walls once taught its carts.
