proliferate出现于1873年，由proliferation逆构而来，最初仅作为生物学术语用于形容细胞生长或繁衍后代。直到1961年后，proliferate才更为广泛地用于形容从核武器扩散到沃尔玛超市扩张等各类事物，主要强调短时间内快速增长、扩散、增殖等。值得注意的是，《不扩散核武器条约》的英语就是“Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons”，缩写NPT，一般简称为《核不扩散条约》（Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty）。
