Police在词典里面的解释是“警察”，一些同学在表达“一名警察”时会顺手写成a police，但这样写是有问题的。
因为police本身是一个复数名词，它指的是“一群警察”，单词不能跟a连用。当它作为主语时，后面的动词要用复数形式。
比如：
Police are investigating the case.
警察正在调查此案。
要表达“一名警察”，应该说 a police officer。
如果要强调是一名男警察或者女警察，可以说a policeman/policewoman。
另外，我们会经常见到the police这一用法，它表示“警方”，意思侧重于机构，而不是具体的一群人。
比如“报警”一般说call the police，这里the police就是指“警方”，call the police就是“打电话给警方”。
虽然“一名警察”不能说a police，但是“五名警察”却可以说five police，这是因为police本身是一个复数名词，复数名词可以被大于一的整数修饰。
比如下面英媒的标题：
Five police face disciplinary action after 'weird stalker' kills model Gracie Spinks, 23
23岁模特格蕾西·斯平克斯遭“诡异跟踪狂”杀害，五名警察因此面临纪律处分
又比如下面的例子：
In footage of the rally, police are seen trying to remove a banner from protesters amid cries of "it’s a banner, it’s not a weapon". In another video, five police are seen arresting one of the students.
现场视频显示，警方试图从抗议者手中夺走一面横幅，现场不断有人高喊：“那只是一面横幅，不是武器！”另一段视频则显示，五名警察正在逮捕其中一名学生。
不过这种用法一般出现在新闻报道和官方文件里面。日常表达更加常见的说法是two/five/ten police officers。
另外，police还可以作为“名词修饰语”跟其他名词搭配，此时它的作用相当于形容词。比如“两辆警车”是 two police cars，“一个警察局”是a police station。
Police还可以作为动词使用，但此时它的意思不是“报警”，而是“维持治安；监督约束”。
举个例子，We need to police him. 应该理解为“我们要约束他”。
在考场写作中经常要表达这样的意思：政府应该监督某某行业（通常是容易造成危险的行业），此时就可以用上这个词。比如：
Social media platforms should be better policed to reduce the spread of misinformation.
Governments need to police the development of artificial intelligence to ensure that it is used responsibly.
