Ancient Ballad No.31 (Excerpt)

He tramped and tramped, nor could his marchabate.

The Hua Mount god rode a white steed fair,

We crossed each other on the level lair.

He left a jade disc for Haochi’s lord to take,

The Qin townsfolk murmured each to each,

“We ought to flee this evil realm’s bleak reach.”

Once they fled far to Peach Spring’s hidden shore,

Streams cut them off a thousand springs ofyore.

Note: This poem originates from Qinlegends. The deity of Hua Mountain on a white horse gives a jade disc to theZheng traveler to give to the Water God of Haochi. This foretells the death ofthe First Emperor (Qin Shi Huang). Upon hearing this prophecy, local Qin peopleescape chaos to Peach Blossom Spring, separated from the mortal world by riversfor thousands of years.（注：此诗源于秦朝传说。华山神骑白马，将玉盘赠予郑国游子，命其送至镐池水神，此乃预示秦始皇（号曰始皇帝）之死兆。闻此预言，秦地百姓避乱至桃花源，与尘世隔绝，历经千年。）

渔舟逐水爱山春，两岸桃花夹古津。

坐看红树不知远，行尽青溪不见人。

樵客初传汉姓名，居人未改秦衣服。

居人共住武陵源，还从物外起田园。

月明松下房栊静，日出云中鸡犬喧。

惊闻俗客争来集，竞引还家问都邑。

平明闾巷扫花开，薄暮渔樵乘水入。

Journey to Peach Spring

They fled the mortal world’s chaotic turn;

Once they attain immortality, they ne’er return.

Who in these valleys knows worldly care?

From mortal lands we gaze at misty peaksbare.

I believe this hidden realm is hard totrace;

Yet mortal heart still longs for nativeplace.

I leave the cave, cross hills and streamsafar;

I leave my home to rove where strangesights are.

I thought my former path I could retrace;
