小年源于古代“祭灶”习俗，可追溯至先秦时期。《礼记》记载“祀灶”为五祀之一，最初为夏季祭祀，东汉后逐渐固定在腊月二十三或二十四。
传说灶神（灶王爷）每年此日上天向玉帝禀报人间善恶，百姓通过祭灶祈求其“上天言好事，回宫降吉祥”。
