谈到自己13岁就开始打职业篮球，东契奇说道：“我总是和比我大两三岁的对手竞争。第一次训练时，他们最初让我和同龄人一起练习，但15分钟后就把我调到了更高级别的队伍。从那时起，我开始和一线队一起训练，那时候我才15或16岁，那些队员都是欧洲的传奇人物。所以我学到了很多。”
