印度财政部自2月1日起将提高烟草税。根据香烟大小，每千支香烟的税率在2050卢比（约155元人民币）到8500卢比（约644元人民币）之间。此前烟草行业已经缴纳40%的商品税和服务税，新税将作为现有税收的补充。
根据世界卫生组织的数据，吸烟每年导致近135万印度人死亡。
