美国国家科学院院士、俄亥俄州立大学地球科学学院教授朗尼·汤普森是第一个到青藏高原开展科考的美国冰川学家、第一个在喜马拉雅山冰川进行钻探的古气候学家。1984 年以来，他先后 29 次到青藏高原进行科考，被中国同行称为中国冰川科考的“引路人”与“合作者”。40多年来，中美联合科考队队员们在高山上爬冰卧雪，共同破译埋藏千万年的“ 青藏高原冰川密码 ”。
