本组照片的拍摄者为爱德华·沙畹（Edouard Chavannes，1865—1918）是学术界公认的十九世纪末二十世纪初世界上最有成就的中国学大师。1907年沙畹第二次来到中国，对中国北方——河北、山东、河南、陕西、山西诸省进行考察，考察过程中拍摄了大量照片，本组照片即拍于此时。
