NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
A recent Business Insider exposé reveals how the United States continues to send millions of pounds of plastic waste to Indonesia, despite the country’s ban on such imports. This report provides important context for the daily reality and challenges that local Waterkeepers like Brantas River Waterkeeper Daru Setyorini tirelessly confront. Plastic pollution in the Brantas River threatens the health of entire communities and highlights the deep injustice of global waste dumping on developing nations. Revisit this series 2 episode of the Equity In Every Drop podcast to hear Daru discuss the devastating impacts on her river, the health risks for local residents, and the power of youth advocacy, including the inspiring work of her daughter, Nina.
Apalachicola Riverkeeper (Florida, U.S.) is celebrating the successful completion of its 2025 RiverTrek. This fundraising and awareness campaign supports the organization's advocacy, education, and outreach efforts, with 100% of the funds raised by volunteer team members going directly to support its work. The RiverTrek team traveled the 107-mile length of the Apalachicola River, where this year's group united in their efforts, fostering a highly successful and memorable experience.
Black Warrior Riverkeeper (Alabama, U.S.) has filed a federal lawsuit against PB Services LLC for violating the Clean Water Act at Bessie Mine and Locust Fork Red Rock in Jefferson County. The lawsuit alleges that the company exceeded the limits set by its pollution discharge permit for various substances, including cadmium, manganese, selenium, thallium, total suspended solids, and toxicity. It also claims that PB Services failed to renew its pollution permit for more than two years and has not conducted the required sampling of its discharges. According to the lawsuit, the operations at Bessie Mine and Locust Fork release processed water into the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River and an unnamed tributary of the Locust Fork.
Congratulations to MountainTrue (North Carolina, U.S.), including Broad Riverkeeper,French Broad Riverkeeper, Green Riverkeeper, Watauga Riverkeeper, and Upper New Riverkeeper, for leading a massive $10 million river cleanup in North Carolina communities affected by Hurricane Helene. This funding will allow the organization to hire a specialized crew, expand into watersheds in eastern Tennessee, and maintain the employment of its 79 staff members until August 2027. Since the disaster, MountainTrue has successfully collected over 4 million pounds of debris from waterways in Western North Carolina.
Congratulations to Penobscot Bay Waterkeeper (Maine, U.S.) on successfully purchasing the former Nordic Aquafarms factory fish farm and permanently conserving this iconic landscape for the community. Nordic abandoned the project and the property last year after a seven-year effort to protect Little River Bay and Penobscot Bay from the potential pollution and environmental destruction associated with the project, which would have harmed water quality and damaged the surrounding forest and wetlands. Pete Nichols, the Executive Director of Penobscot Bay Waterkeeper, shared that raising $ 1.5 million for the property's purchase was a long and challenging process. He expressed his sincere gratitude for the community's support throughout this project.
Potomac Riverkeeper Network (District of Columbia, U.S.) is launching a three-part webinar series on toxic “forever chemicals” and the land application of biosolids. The first session, Human Health Risks of PFAS from Land-Applied Biosolids in Agriculture, will explore how PFAS move through agricultural systems and their impacts on human health, food safety, and water quality. Join experts in agricultural science, ecotoxicology, engineering, and public health on Wednesday, November 19, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. ET, to learn about the latest research and strategies to reduce risks and protect communities. Register here.
Tualatin Riverkeeper (Oregon, U.S.) was a featured guest on KBOO Radio's Locus Focus to discuss measures to protect our natural resources from a growing threat. Oregon's Tualatin River watershed is one of the nation's richest agricultural regions, yet massive data centers are rapidly consuming farmland while using an unprecedented amount of water and electricity for a single industry. It was the second of a two-part series exposing the damaging effects of data centers and stresses the importance of being proactive in addressing these issues.
Waterkeepers Iraq (Iraq) recently announced the launch of its new Heavy Water Treatment Project. After years of working on this project, they are finally in the final stages, and the station will soon be operational, marking a historic turning point in the region.
