犼不仅是万兽的始祖。根据历史传说，犼最初只是似犬的野兽，直到清代才逐渐形成人性化的形象。
《偃曝馀谈》记载："犼形如兔，两耳尖长，仅长尺余，狮畏之，盖吼溺着体即腐"。
