NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Altamaha Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) along with The Center for Biological Diversity, One Hundred Miles, Skidaway Audubon, and Coastal Plain Conservation Group, submitted a petition on September 30 to the State of Georgia, urging officials to require bycatch reduction devices on all blue crab pots in near-shore waters where terrapins are frequently found. When installed on crab pot entrance funnels, these small and inexpensive devices prevent most terrapins from entering the pot, while having little to no effect on crab haul.
Anacostia Riverkeeper (District of Columbia, U.S.), Trey Sherard, recently discussed a newly proposed policy that would introduce a 10-cent refundable deposit on most beverage containers to encourage recycling. Plastic bottles account for 60% of the weight of all trash floating in the Anacostia River. Based on the success of the bag fee, it is expected that there will be fewer bottles littering the ground. However, many believe this policy may lead to increased prices for many everyday beverages. Several large distributors and national beverage associations have opposed this legislation.
Great Basin Water Network, the parent organization for Great Basin Waterkeeper (Nevada, U.S.), Living Rivers/Colorado Riverkeeper (Utah, U.S.), Save the Colorado (parent organization for Poudre Waterkeeper (Colorado, U.S.), and Utah Rivers Council, the parent organization of Great Salt Lake Waterkeeper (Utah, U.S.), along with other partners, released a new report that provides nine recommendations for the current and future federal administrations to effectively monitor the decline in reservoir levels alongside the region’s snowpacks and runoff. This report urges the principal negotiators representing the seven basin states to consider this framework when deciding what is best for their water resources and communities moving forward. It is also hoped that the public will use this document as a catalyst for increased awareness and engagement.
Hudson Riverkeeper (New York, U.S.) has issued a warning after recent testing revealed that both the Hudson River and the Saw Mill River failed water quality tests for fecal bacteria. The tests showed that some locations had fecal pollution levels exceeding the federally accepted limits by ten times or more. Shannon Roback, the Science Director for Hudson Riverkeeper, stated that the contamination levels are significant enough that if a swimmer were to accidentally swallow the water, they could experience gastrointestinal issues. Hudson Riverkeeper has also published a map showing the water quality levels in the Hudson River and its tributaries.
Mobile Baykeeper (Alabama, U.S.) has responded to a recent study from the University of Alabama, which revealed elevated levels of arsenic and cadmium in river sediments. In their statement, Mobile Baykeeper highlighted that these toxic metals are associated with serious health risks, including cancer and kidney failure. Despite this, Alabama Power continues to store 21 million tons of coal ash in an unlined pit situated directly on the banks of the Mobile River. Also, Mobile Baykeeper is urging the power company to provide a timeline and plan for recycling coal ash, which is currently under appeal in the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.
