Kevin

Kevin

Kevin已获offer:加州大学伯克利分校(University of California-Berkeley);华盛顿大学西雅图分校(University of Washington, Seattle);加州大学圣地亚哥分校(University of California-San Diego);伊利诺伊大学厄巴纳-香槟分校(University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign);北卡罗来纳大学教堂山分校( University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill);麦吉尔大学(Mcgill University)。

01

Kevin

Kevin the Hexagonal Warrior

Knocking on Berkeley's Door with a Multidimensional Competency Matrix

Kevin

Farragut Class of 2025

Student Body President

Admitted: University of California, Berkeley

In the fierce competition of U.S. college applications, Kevin Wang broke the traditional image of the school bully with his unique "hexagonal ability matrix". This young man, who is going to study engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, proves to us that the acceptance letter from a top university is never based on a well-packaged and perfect persona, but rather comes from the relentless exploration of the real self.

During the graduation ceremony, Kevin took a selfie with Mr. Yang Xiaoke, the founder of Tianjin Farragut School, and Mr. Gao Yue, the Executive Principal.

Kevin has been offered these admissions:University of California-Berkeley;University of Washington, Seattle;University of California-San Diego;University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign;University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill;Mcgill University。

01

Three reasons to choose Farragut

The three photos above show Kevin speaking at the 2025 graduation ceremony as the English interpreter for Mr. Yang Xiaoke, the founder of Tianjin Farragut School.

“The choice of Farragut was well thought out at the time.” Kevin recalls. "What struck me most was the school's amazing growth curve - from the aptitude tests at enrollment to the admissions results at graduation, the progress of the students was evident to the naked eye. Even more critical was the school's ‘acceptance rate advantage’: although the absolute number of admissions to the top colleges is not the largest, the probability that an individual will be accepted to a top school is higher due to the small number of students. I look at the percentage rather than the absolute number, and the fact that the majority of students get into a Top 30 or Top 33 school is a very impressive and convincing statistic. In addition, Farragut's small class sizes allowed me to get more personalized instruction. It's a more relaxed environment than a traditional “roll school,” which in turn makes it easier for me to focus on growth."

02

The perfect answer

to six-dimensional growth

During his three years at Farragut, Kevin has vividly interpreted the richness of the “Hexagonal Warrior” with his practical actions.

Academically, Kevin has shown an amazing desire to explore and courage. He took 13 - 15 courses, and as an engineering student, not only completed all the science courses such as math, physics, chemistry, biology, statistics, and environmental science, but also boldly challenged himself with liberal arts courses such as U.S. History, World History, English Literature, and Economics. “It's important to take both arts and sciences, and even if the scores aren't ideal (say 3 - 4), that challenging spirit itself adds points to the application.” His words are characterized by a thirst for knowledge and a quest for self-breakthroughs.

At the graduation ceremony of the Class of 2025, Ms. Zhang Wei, Director of Corporate Communications of OTIS China, presented the award to the “AI Explorer Team”, and Kevin received the award on behalf of the team.

In his academic endeavors, competitions have become an important stage for him to test and improve his abilities. In the 5th OTIS Campus Innovation Competition China Final, as a member of the “AI Explorer Team”, he was responsible for the overall design, focusing on hardware design and multi-ladder optimization, as well as code writing. He was also responsible for code writing. The team won the national championship with the “AI Innovation and Transformation Elevator” competition proposal. The AI intelligent elevator they designed integrates the functions of no-touch call, intelligent seat, intelligent navigation and cloud security, and applies advanced language model to optimize the algorithm of multi-elevator synergy, which can improve the operation efficiency and achieve energy saving at the same time. The goal is to achieve energy saving while improving operational efficiency. This achievement not only highlights his solid academic foundation and interdisciplinary integration ability, but also reflects his innovative thinking of applying knowledge to practice and solving real-world problems.

Pictured is the “AI Explorer Team” when they won the championship of the 5th “Believe in Yourself, Create the Future” OTIS Campus Innovation Competition in China.

Kevin's classmates with Mr. Yuan, Physics Teacher (STEAM Club Instructor)

This innovative thinking has been on display in his journey as a creator. When he enrolled in his freshman year of high school, he found that the school lacked an engineering club, and he took the initiative to apply for the creation of a STEAM club. Unlike other clubs, the core of the program is to design projects from scratch, rather than simply assembling prefabricated parts. The “Single Slit Diffraction and Double Slit Interference Experiment” that he led the club members to complete is a classic - the blade was skillfully fixed on the iron frame table in the lab, and by irradiating the laser, the width of the slit was successfully adjusted dynamically, showing the ingenuity of scientific exploration.

Outside the classroom, he even integrates artistic inspiration into engineering practice: when designing chip keychains, he encapsulates discarded chips in epoxy resin and creates colorful keychains and handicrafts. In order to get the project off the ground, he also opened up several production lines and constantly adjusted his strategy according to market feedback. These projects not only perfectly demonstrate his “ability to transform creativity into practical application”, but also skillfully blend the rigor of science and technology, the aesthetics of art and business thinking, becoming a vivid embodiment of his interdisciplinary ability.

The picture shows the process of making a chip keychain

In terms of public welfare, he adheres to the concept of “let nature take its course”, selecting samples at different stages of production from the leftover chip keychains and donating them to museums and primary and secondary schools, so that public welfare is naturally integrated into the project, breaking the Asian stereotype of “specializing in public welfare”. The project is a natural integration of philanthropy into the project, breaking the stereotype of “specializing in philanthropy”.

In terms of leadership, Kevin has demonstrated a vision for the future as President of the Student Government Association (SGA). He has implemented a student council internship program to help future student council members gain work experience in advance to ensure a smooth transition; he has redefined the roles of each department to address the imbalance in staffing and make the distribution of manpower among departments more even; and before graduation, he plans to use the prize money gained from the national championship of the OTIS competition to set up a foundation within the student council to support future activities. These initiatives fully reflect his leadership philosophy of “not only doing the immediate work, but also thinking about the future of the team”, which also fully demonstrates his organizational skills and big-picture perspective.

Mr. Gao Yue, Executive Principal, presented Kevin with a letter of appointment to the Student Council.

Sports-wise, kayaking has added a different dimension to his upbringing. The sport has not only won Kevin many national awards, but has also become his leisure hobby. He says, “I love the quietness of being in a boat and the combination of nature and humanity.”

The picture shows Kevin's record when he participated in kayaking after school.

He has found the secret to balancing his heavy academic load and activities, "The internet often says ‘you can only choose two out of three: academics, socializing, and sleep,’ but my strategy is 'all three.' I would cross-schedule my in-class studies and extracurricular activities, using the latter as a kind of mind relaxation." This ability to balance allows him to excel in all areas with ease.

Kevin also enjoys photography, here are some of his aerial shots

03

Wisdom of the application season

At the sharing session, he emphasized to the siblings to establish a scientific application gradient (e.g. Top30 level can be sprinted to Top20 + guaranteed Top50-100), and especially reminded the sophomore stage to make clear the strategic difference between ED and RD. He also shared many in-depth application tips: “Don't be too obsessed with school rankings, different time, different school list reference factors are different, rankings fluctuate a lot, there is no need to treat the 29th and 33rd school differently, by the time of graduation how the ranking is not yet known.”

Kevin shared his application experience with students at the college experience sharing session.

For major selection, he advises, "Don't compromise on your major if you have a guaranteed school. Studying abroad is like buying a product, choose a major you like, the school is a platform to help you move forward on the path of your favorite major, if you choose a major you don't like, even if you get into a good school, you may go in the wrong direction."

During the application season Kevin held up the upside down OFFER, signifying “OFFER has arrived!”

He also gave examples of how to combine hobbies with specialized knowledge in the paperwork. For writing the paperwork, he suggests, "In the list of activities and the paperwork, you may want to incorporate more details of your life - small daily things like cooking and housework can be unique material. People can even moderately show their joys and sorrows, so that the admissions officers can see a vivid three-dimensional, flesh and blood you." These practical suggestions have benefited the students and faculty.

Concluding Remarks

When he received the Berkeley offer, Kevin's heart was calm and sure, because he knew that the acceptance was not an award for the “perfect persona”, but an affirmation of his true self. All the advice that came his way during the application season made him realize one thing, and now that he's about to embark on a new journey, he's sharing this insight with more people: “Not every piece of advice is good advice.” This aphorism is both a summary of his independent judgment in maintaining independence amidst the deluge of information, and more like a key that opens up the mindset of rationally looking at applications for underclassmen.

On Farragut's campus, Kevin spent three years sketching out a vivid “hexagonal” growth chart. Each vertex of the map is glittering with unadorned sincerity - it is not a deliberately carved halo, but a vivid mark of a young man who boldly explores himself and bravely breaks through the boundaries, which is the most touching interpretation of the word “growth”.
