据美国地质调查局地震信息网信息，地震发生于当地时间25日上午11时37分（北京时间25日7时37分），震中位于马塔乌图东南偏南176公里处，震源深度314公里。
瓦利斯和富图纳是法国的海外领地，位于环太平洋火山地震带，因地壳板块相互碰撞而地震频发。
