深海平原在 4000 米（13000 英尺）的深度出现，但海洋的深度还不止于此。接下来是深度达 6000 米（19000 英尺）的 Hadal Zone（超深渊带 ）；该区域最深的部分是马里亚纳海沟，深度达到 10935 米（35876 英尺） ，这使得它比珠穆朗玛峰的高度还要深 。
