(Energy Talk: Youth for Just Transition)的互动活动中担任主讲人。

JULY 07, 2025
NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Apalachicola Riverkeeper (Florida, U.S.) was pleased by recent legislation that helps prevent oil drilling near Northwest Florida's Apalachicola River and Apalachicola Bay. This bill (HB 1143) was introduced in response to last year's decision by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to permit Louisiana-based Clearwater Land & Minerals to drill an exploratory well near the Apalachicola River. Apalachicola Riverkeeper challenged the draft permit, and an administrative law judge recommended rejecting the project, which eventually led the Department of Environmental Protection to deny the permit. This “Kill The Drill” bill will effectively prevent drilling within 10 miles of the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve.
LA Waterkeeper (California, U.S.) was featured in a recent New York Times article, emphasizing the urgent need for Los Angeles to rethink its water use strategies after years of persistent drought. Over time, despite a growing population, studies show that the Los Angeles area is consuming less water. With a population of approximately 3.9 million, the city currently uses about 454,000 acre-feet of water per year. If severe drought conditions continue as predicted, the state could lose up to 10 percent of its water supply by 2040. Conservation efforts have been significant for the city, and many believe that even practical, gradual solutions are not enough to ensure water security. One of the most effective ways to address this issue is by recycling, reusing, and conserving the existing water supply. However, there are concerns that the costs of recycling facilities may be higher than taxpayers are willing to bear. Besides, convincing the residents of Los Angeles to accept recycled wastewater for drinking may be one of the biggest challenges in this process.
Miami Waterkeeper (Florida, U.S.) was featured in a recent article by the Miami Herald discussing fish kills from extreme temperatures. More likely to occur during the summer because of excessive rain, runoff, and sewage leaks, these incidents are commonly found around canals, nearshore areas, and parts of Biscayne Bay affected by stormwater runoff or septic systems. When encountering a fish kill, people are advised to take a video and record the exact location and time. This information should then be emailed to Miami-Dade County regulators or reported to Miami Waterkeeper. Some primary causes of low-oxygen events in Biscayne Bay include nutrient pollution, harmful algal blooms, and groundwater discharges, all of which are intensified during the summer rainy season.
Puget Soundkeeper (Washington, U.S.) has secured a major legal win toward addressing long-standing pollution issues and reinforcing accountability within the maritime industry. The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal by the Port of Tacoma and SSA Terminals, effectively upholding lower court rulings that hold the companies accountable under the Clean Water Act. Originally filed in 2017, the case focused on violations related to the defendants’ stormwater discharge permit. The Port of Tacoma has a documented history of releasing toxic metals into Puget Sound via stormwater runoff.
Spokane Riverkeeper (Washington, U.S.) has settled with the town of Spangle after filing a lawsuit against them in 2021. Although the court did not find Spangle liable for violating the Clean Water Act, the town has agreed to a 10-year settlement that requires it to upgrade its infrastructure and comply with strict monitoring and permitting regulations until 2035. As part of the agreement, Spangle must pay $29,000 in legal fees to Spokane Riverkeeper and a $2,500 fine to the U.S. Treasury in response to the alleged violations. Also, Spangle is required to submit plans for a water quality study by September 2025, provide final construction designs by 2029, and complete all related projects by 2031.
Waterkeepers Bangladesh (Bangladesh) recently organized celebrations in honor of World Environment Day in Jamalpur and Chunati. These events aimed to raise public awareness about the importance of trees in protecting the environment and the harmful effects of plastic waste. Speakers emphasized the impact individuals can have by planting and caring for trees, urging everyone to contribute to greening their homes and communities. One highlight was the distribution of 1,000 tree saplings among students, with awards to be given to those who show the best care for their saplings after six months. In other news, Sharif Jamil, the executive director of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, was a featured speaker at an interactive event called “Energy Talk: Youth for Just Transition.” During this event, he discussed Bangladesh’s energy situation, renewable potentials, policy challenges, and the active role of youth in climate advocacy. He elaborated on the qualities of climate warriors and the movement to protect the Sundarbans from coal-power projects, warning about the threats of river pollution and the impact that upstream infrastructure in neighboring communities has on Bangladesh’s river systems.

Extreme Weather Resources
Many parts of the United States are experiencing record-breaking heat waves, leaving millions grappling with extreme temperatures, power outages, and wildfires. The Union of Concerned Scientists offers a tool that maps extreme weather events worsened by climate change, while the National Wildlife Federation explores the rise of extreme heat and highlights resilience strategies—like Milwaukee’s Green Schools Initiative and an underground greenhouse project led by the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. These heat waves and extreme weather patterns are not unique to the U.S. If you have resources or stories to share, please reach out to Climate and Safe Energy Campaign Manager Isaiah Back-Gaal so we can share and amplify.
