MonoNeon，本名Dywane Thomas Jr.，1990年出生于美国田纳西州孟菲斯，是一位格莱美奖获奖贝斯手、作曲家与多乐器演奏者。MonoNeon成长于音乐世家，父亲是Bar-Kays乐队的贝斯手，祖父是爵士钢琴家，母亲在车上放的惠特尼·休斯顿也成了他童年音乐灵魂启蒙的一部分。

MonoNeon四岁起就开始自学贝斯，十几岁开始在教堂演奏并与Bar-Kays同台演出。他曾短暂就读于伯克利音乐学院，期间与David Fiuczynski同台演出。尽管在专业音乐学院待过一段时间，但MonoNeon的音乐从来不属于任何学院派传统。他用行为艺术般的手法解构音乐与现实之间的边界——他用袜子裹住琴头、用五彩胶带装饰琴身，他演奏的不是音符，而是一种对世界本质的质疑。

MonoNeon, whose real name is Dwayne Thomas, Jr., was born in 1990 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Raised in a musical family, he’s now a Grammy Award-winning bassist, composer and multi-instrumentalist. His grandfather was a jazz pianist, his father was the bassist for the Bar-Kays, and his mother blasted Whitney Houston in the car, which he says initiated him into the soul music world.

MonoNeon has been a self-taught bassist since the age of four. As a child, he played in churches and began playing with the Bar-Kays in his teens. He had a short stint at Berklee College of Music, where he developed a relationship with David Fiuczynski. Despite spending time in professional conservatories, his music has never belonged to any academic tradition. By deconstructing the boundaries between music and reality through performance art, he wraps songs around the bass's headstock and decorates the body with multi-colored tape. He doesn’t play notes, he plays question marks to the world’s biggest quandaries.

His music mixes southern soul, improvisational jazz, funk, and psychedelia into experimentation that pushes the boundaries of traditional styles and delivers a feast for the senses.

Pitchfork called his work “a fusion of social media absurdity and pioneering funkadelia”. Rolling Stone praised him for “creating a new grammar for future funk,” and BASS Player wrote frankly, “He is a wild innovator of the bass guitar.”

2015年，MonoNeon曾与流行传奇Prince合作，在Paisley Park的录音棚里共同打造音乐，是Prince生前最后一位现场合作的贝斯手。在他眼中，Prince不仅是偶像，更是“真正听懂了我音乐里怪异元素的人”。

In 2015, MonoNeon worked with pop legend Prince in the Paisley Park studio and was the last bassist to work with him live. In his eyes, Prince was not only an icon, but “someone who really listened to the weird elements of my music.”

Prince之后，他继续以个人名义发表大量作品，包括2020年的《Toxic Wasteland 2: The Hills》、2021年的《Banana Peel on Capitol Hill》以及2024年发行、深受好评的《Quilted Stereo》，一张融合爵士、嘻哈、实验放克与人声采样的先锋之作，生猛又幽默，怪诞又迷人。

After Prince, MonoNeon continued to release a wealth of work as a solo artist, including 2020’s “Toxic Wasteland 2: The Hills”, 2021’s “Banana Peel on Capitol Hill”, and the critically acclaimed “Quilted Stereo”, released in 2024, and was described as a trailblazing blend of jazz, hip-hop, experimental funk and vocal samples that is raw and humorous, quirky and captivating.

MonoNeon contributed to Nas’ “King’s Disease”, which won a Grammy, and has worked extensively with artists such as Ne-Yo, Mavis Staples, George Clinton, Mac Miller, Georgia Anne Muldrow and many others. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers unabashedly praised him as “the greatest electric bass player”.

On stage, MonoNeon is an explosion of sights and sounds. He’s performed at some of the most legendary festivals like the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Newport Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Music Festival and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

MonoNeon’s musical roots are funky, but he doesn’t stop there. He mixes soulful textures, bluesy melancholy, hip-hop poetry, jazz improvisation in subtly contrasting sonic excursions into dadaist absurdity to create a unique “Funktronica” and “Psychedelic Soul”.

In his videos, he often improvises on the bass to create the background music for what he’s watching on the Internet, funny clips, everyday human behavior and the absurdity of reality. He doesn’t shy away from “mistakes”; he transforms them into new paths just as John Cage advocated, “Randomness is order!”

His music, a mixture of contemporary psychedelia and social observation, is a Picasso for the ears and a Basquiat on the bass strings.

MonoNeon has an instantly recognizable persona—a neon fabric-covered bass, banana peel headstock and colorful mask—all of which boldly represent the challenging relationship between identity, culture, sound and vision. He intertwines internet fetishism and abstract humor into his music, creating hilarious and thought-provoking songs.

His bass is often labeled with peculiar phrases, with undertones of cultural commentary, mockery and symbolism. His music is a critical examination of reality through the dismantling and reorganization of traditional aesthetics. As he says, “I don’t want to become one of the greats, I want to be myself.”

His presence is a radical reinvention of how music is heard, seen and perceived.

In November of 2022, Fender co-branded the MonoNeon Signature Jazz Bass V. A work of art in its own right, it features an alder body with a dazzling neon yellow urethane finish, with the headstock and guards adorned with a neon orange paint job. The one-piece maple neck has a 22-pin curvature (10” by 14”) fingerboard with elegant inlaid pearl markers. It features custom Fireball 5-string humbucker pickups that deliver a rich, powerful tone, along with an 18-volt active preamp and a three-band EQ, providing flexible tuning capabilities for a wide range of musical styles. The Fender HiMass through-body bridge enhances resonance and sustain, and the gold-plated hardware adds luxurious texture to this visually stunning bass guitar.
