五台山位于山西省忻州市，因由五座峰顶平坦如台的山峰组成而得名，五峰之外称台外，五峰之内称台内，台内以台怀镇为中心。五台山最低处海拔仅624米，最高处北台顶海拔3061.1米，称之为“华北屋脊”。
五台山为我国四大佛教名山之一，文殊菩萨道场，因此五台又象征着文殊菩萨的五种智慧。五台山也是中国青庙(汉传佛教)黄庙(藏传佛教)共处的佛教道场。
