海牛目现存海牛科的3种和儒艮科的1种。它们是大型水生哺乳动物，植食性，主要吃海草，偶尔摄入小动物。雌性的乳头位于前肢基部，一般每胎产一只幼崽。海牛妈妈与小海牛有亲密的互动。海牛妈妈会陪小海牛到水面换气；小海牛游累了，就趴在海牛妈妈背上休息。
