Crafting a business plan? Challenging but doable. Pitching your startup idea to an actual investor? Now that’s the real test! A while back, Concordia Applied Learning Business & Finance students got a front-row seat to professional entrepreneurship when Palm Capital founder Ms. Houming Li joined as guest judge for their annual Entrepreneurship Challenge.
The excitement kicked off with rapid-fire “elevator pitches” – each team had just 60 seconds to hook the panel with their business concept. But that was just the warm-up! Students then dove deep into full venture presentations complete with competitor analysis, financial projections, marketing plan, organizational structure, and even balance sheet and cash flow statement. Their mission? To secure mock Series A funding in a simulated VC (venture capital) environment.
Ms. Li didn’t hold back on professional wisdom, sharing hard-earned insights from her VC career while suggesting students “futureproofing” their ideas through AI integration.
Behind the scenes, our AL BF students spent two months conducting market research, crafting financial projections, and refining their pitches using the Design Thinking framework. They embraced the journey of innovation with creativity, resilience, and a willingness to learn from every challenge.
Concordia caught up with participants to hear how this crash course in entrepreneurship shaped their perspectives:
“Creating our own company was super fun - the whole experience was the perfect blend of creative ideation, design, finance, marketing, and sales. After this project, I’m seriously considering entrepreneurship as part of my future career.” — Amy W., G12
“The Entrepreneurship Challenge was an immersive experience of turning ideas into action - collaborating with group members to breathe life into a startup from concept to launch. Navigating every facet, from marketing to financial modeling, revealed the necessity for creativity and statistics to work together.” — Abriel H., G11
“Two months ago, building a startup from scratch felt impossible. Today, while our business model remains a pitch on paper, the real value lies in what we learned through constant ideation and adaptation.” — Rulin H., G12
“Although presenting to real investors was a nerve-wracking experience, it was an amazing opportunity to present ideas that I was genuinely passionate about and excited to share.” — Fiona Z., G12
“Watching my students transform their ideas into tangible business concepts during the Entrepreneurship Challenge has been nothing short of inspiring,” comments Mr. Steven Sgourdos, high school Social Science teacher and founder of the AL BF course. He adds, “This experience isn’t just about building a startup; it’s aboutdeveloping the mindset of an entrepreneur- where every obstacle is an opportunity to grow and every idea has the potential to become something impactful.”
