Milo liked used bookstores.
Not just for the books, but for thelives left behind inside them—ticket stubs, grocery lists, love notes, and sometimes… something more.
One rainy afternoon, he wandered into a little shop tucked between a bakery and a florist.
He picked up a weathered copy of Jane Eyre.
As he flipped through the pages, something slipped out.
Aphotograph.
A girl, sitting on a windowsill, reading, sunlight pouring onto her shoulder.
On the back, in faded blue ink:
“To whoever finds this: If you’re holding this book, I hope you love it like I did. And if you ever want to return it—bring it back here, on the first Sunday of any month. I might be watching.” —L”
He read it twice. Then again.
And something in him said:Go.
So on the first Sunday of the month, he came back.
The shop was quiet.
He waited. Browsed. Bought tea from the bakery next door.
No one came.
But he returned the next month.
And the next.
Each time, he stayed a little longer.
Until one Sunday, as he sat by the front window reading, someone walked in.
Shewalked in.
Same eyes as the photo. A little older. Still carrying a book.
She didn’t notice him at first.
But when she reached for the shelf where Jane Eyre used to be, he stood.
Held out the book.
“I think this is yours.”
She looked at the worn cover. Then at him.
Andsmiledlike she’d been waiting for someone to answer a question she asked long ago.
