MARCH 24, 2025
NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Khowai River Waterkeeper( Bangladesh ) conducted an inspection of the Khowai River, focusing on issues such as illegal sand extraction, encroachment, and pollution. The organization carried out the inspection by boat and observed widespread unregulated sand mining and the dumping of waste materials in the area. This sand mining makes the river muddy and disrupts its flow, which is harmful to the breeding and movement of fish and other aquatic organisms. Residents in the region rely on the polluted river for essential activities like bathing and washing, which poses a significant health risk. The inspection concluded with a united call for immediate action to restore the river's natural ecosystem and protect the health of the people who depend on it.
Choctawhatchee Riverkeeperis excited to welcome Brittany LaPointe as the new Development and Outreach Director. Brittany holds a Master of Science in Environmental Science from Troy University and is currently completing a certificate program in Geographic Information Science after finishing her internship. She has previously volunteered with organization, assisting with bacteriological monitoring, and recently contributed to PFAS sample collection. Congratulations, Brittany! We look forward to your future successes.
Pashur Waterkeeper(Bangladesh), along with partners Sundarban Rakhhai Amra and Dhaka - We Protect the Earth, conducted a river inspection and sit-in program to protect the Pashur River in Mongla, Bagerhat. The chief guest, Mo. Selim, emphasized that rivers are an essential part of Bangladesh's tradition and culture. He described the numerous rivers as the lifeblood of the country. However, he noted that these rivers are currently facing a crisis due to climate change, pollution, encroachment, unplanned development, administrative weaknesses, and water withdrawal by upstream countries.
HudsonRiverkeeper(New York, U.S.) recently expressed deep disappointment over EPA's failure to acknowledge the overwhelming evidence that cleaning up PCBs in the Hudson River is essential for safeguarding human health and the environment. General Electric has released millions of pounds of PCBs into the river, resulting in significant pollution and disruption to the river’s ecosystem. More than 15 House members from New York and New Jersey are urging EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to determine that additional cleanup is necessary for the Hudson River, a step that would provide relief to millions of people and businesses along its banks.
Suncoast Waterkeeper(Florida, U.S.) has published its 2024 year-end review, which analyzes water quality data around the Suncoast region. The report highlights how storms have affected water quality in the area. In some locations, waters recovered more quickly after Hurricanes Helena and Milton due to less rainfall, while areas on Longboat Key experienced prolonged contamination because of debris that entered the waterways. Suncoast Waterkeeper identified high levels of enterococci, a fecal matter indicator, which worsened with heavy rainfall in local waterways. Additionally, during drier months, the decomposition of plant matter further contributed to increased enterococci levels. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution around these high-risk areas, as they may pose health hazards.
Surma River Waterkeeper(Bangladesh) and DHORA-Sylhet organized a protest by creating a human chain at Chandon Ghat along the banks of the Surma River. The protest aimed to combat illegal sand extraction in several rivers, including Kushiyara, Piyain, Sari, and Dholai. Speakers at the event emphasized that this illegal activity could lead to an environmental disaster that would affect the entire community. They pointed out that not only does illegal sand extraction result in a loss of government revenue, but it also damages the region’s rivers, harming the environment and disrupting local wildlife.
Tennessee Riverkeeper(Alabama, U.S.) successfully removed over 1,100 pounds of trash from the Cumberland River, including 17 tires and 24 bags filled with plastic bottles, shopping bags, and styrofoam. This cleanup is part of the organization's broader goal to educate the public about the dangers of pollution and garbage in our waterways. According to Tennessee Riverkeeper, these cleanups have prevented more than 54,000 pounds of trash from entering water systems.
Tampa Bay Waterkeeper(Florida, U.S.) is advocating for stronger protections for state parks. The organization is pushing for stricter language in a bill to prevent development within state parks, especially in areas labeled as 'disturbed.' This follows a 2024 proposal by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to allow increased development (pickleball courts, lodging, etc.) in state parks, which was met with public opposition. Tampa Bay Waterkeeper wants the bill to explicitly prohibit development in any area of state parks and prioritize restoration. They urge the public to contact their elected officials to advocate for these stronger protections.
Willamette Riverkeeper(Oregon, U.S. ) , along with partners Cascadia Wildlands, Native Fish Society, and Oregon Wild, has filed a lawsuit against the Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) for ongoing violations of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). EWEB has failed to provide adequate fish passage, leading to the injury and death of ESA-listed Chinook salmon and bull trout in the McKenzie River. This failure also prevents the fish from accessing crucial spawning, rearing, and feeding areas. Initially, EWEB agreed to construct a fish ladder at the Trail Bridge Dam but later abandoned this plan in favor of a trap-and-haul system due to economic considerations. In 2023, a former EWEB employee revealed that the organization never intended to implement a fish passage and falsely cited delays as excuses. Attorneys from Public Justice represent the organizations in this case.
