三、深入解读

covert 与 overt 和 covet 形似，在阅读写作时要小心区别。但从上面《纽约时报》的例句不难看出， covert 不仅与 overt 形似，而且含义恰好相反。

Overt 一词源自拉丁语aperire（打开、揭开）经古法语overt（对应现代法语 ouvert）进入英语，原指服装、书籍等“打开的、松开的”，不过这一含义已经废弃，现主要作为一个正式用语形容行为或态度等“公开的、明显的、不隐瞒的”，或在法律领域表示“明显的、蓄意的”，比如：

• 从公然威吓到微妙的情感胁迫，各种战术都用上了。

• 他没有明显表现出极度痛苦。
