古人将寒露分为三候：一候鸿雁来宾，二候雀入大水为蛤，三候菊有黄华。所谓“鸿雁来宾”指的是，鸿雁飞往南方，此时应为最后一批，古人称后至者为“宾”；“雀入大水为蛤”是说，天渐寒，雀鸟都不见了，而海中的蚌蛤产出变多，就好像雀变成蛤似的；“菊有黄华”是说，此时菊花已普遍开放。
