Jing'an shines bright

for Chinese New Year

Ring in the Chinese New Year with festive decor. Dragon sculptures, red lanterns, Chinese knots and other lucky symbols were on display all over the district.

A carnival celebrating folk art like shadow puppetry, lantern-making, sugar-figurine blowing and chunlian (Chinese New Year couplets) writing were also part of the festivities.

In particular, the light display welcoming the Year of the Dragon on Nanjing Road W. was a must-see.

The light show connected six sites along the road — Jiuguang Department Store, Jing'an Park, Shanghai Center, Shanghai Exhibition

Center, HKRI Taikoo Hui and KYMS — forming an “illuminated dragon” swooping through downtown.

It featured a variety of light displays, including light installations, LED displays, naked-eye 3D projections and 3D projection mapping on facades depicting dragons, flowers, golden coins and other auspicious items.

The dragon is the fifth sign of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, and is probably the most celebrated sign because Chinese people believe they are descendants of dragons. Throughout the district, there are symbols to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Join us to find dragons in Jing'an.

Jiuguang Department Store

Address: 1618 Nanjing Rd W.

A charity painting exhibition, featuring dragon paintings by children with disabilities and those from mountainous areas in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, is on show at the glass room on its terrace on the second floor.

In addition, at the mall’s atrium, there stands a 3-meter-high dragon installation created by young artist Luo Ming.

Zhangyuan

Address: Lane 188 Maoming Rd N.

Zhangyuan, a commercial complex in the style of shikumen stone-gate buildings, has a “blooming dragon” at its main entrance.

The huge dragon installation is made from colored petals, looking like yellow, orange and red roses, which creates a romantic vibe in the historical alleyways.

On Maoming Rd N., there also lies a 30-meter-long golden dragon installation.

Shanghai Suhewan MIXC World

Address: 100 Fujian Rd N.

Tucked away in narrow alleyways in Shenyuli — a large shikumen neighborhood in a commercial complex — stands a 3.5-meter-high wish-granting dragon.

The pink dragon, from the 2021 Shanghai-set animated film “Wish Dragon,” opens his arms and waits to hear people's wishes. It is part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of Columbia Pictures.

CITIC Square

Address: 1168 Nanjing Rd W.

A 30-meter-high scroll painting-style art installation, as if it is a sealed book falling from the heavens, spreads straight through the middle of the mall.

Titled “Lucky Dragon,” it depicts two dragons — one in cyan and one in pink — flying over the clouds.

Artist Zhang Yu presents a huge Chinese ink-wash painting on glaze-like translucent materials to create a subtle blend of traditional and modern beauty.

On the second floor, there's a dragon-themed exhibition where renowned scholar Gao Youpeng shows his calligraphy works of dragons, which are based on oracle bone inscriptions. There are also sugar paintings of dragons.

From February 10 to 17, the district's tourist destinations received a total of 238,300 visitors, with year-on-year increase of 86.03%.

In particular, Zhangyuan, or Zhang's Garden, received over 30,000 people every day, up 100 percent from last year's Chinese New Year holiday period.

From February 9 to 16, eight major shopping centers received over 300,000 people every day, and together they fetched in sales revenues of 708 million yuan (US$98.5 million).

The district has released over 41,800 discount coupons between February 5 and 25. They could be used at more than 1,080 places.

Tulips display

Tulips have burst into bloom in downtown Jing'ansi areas to herald the arrival of spring.

Around the Jing'ansi Metro Station, the streets are decked in bright colors like orange and red.

It has made the area a popular place to take photos to post on social networks.

Since 2019, the district's greenery authority has been planting tulips in corner gardens and roadside flowerbeds.

New regional headquarters

Global consultancy Roland Berger has moved its Asia-Pacific headquarters to the Suhe Center.

Founded in Germany 1967, Roland Berger is one of the top five global strategy consulting firms, operating in 34 countries with 51 branches and over 3,000 employees.

Roland Berger has been in China for 40 years, and has opened offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Taipei and Guangzhou.

Suhewan, the waterfront areas of Suzhou Creek in Jing'an, has emerged as a new magnet for headquarters of global companies, such as Tapestry, Canada Goose and Grey Group China.

Great places at your doorstep

The exhibition and information center at Shaanxi Road N. has recently been listed in the city's latest batch of “great places at your doorstep.”

The two-story venue on 600 Shaanxi Road N. serves to showcase the history and culture of the neighborhood, which is home to tens of celebrities and historic buildings, such as the Pacific Garden, the Ohel Rachel Synagogue and the former residence of Hong Kong tycoon Ho Tung.

The center also provides people a site to enjoy coffee, read books, learn about the city's history, make handicrafts and attend lectures.

Currently, 15 sites in Jing'an have been included on the list. Others include the Jing’an District Children’s Library, Zhangyuan — Fengshengli and the Pengpu Four Seasons Park.

Silent cafe

Starting from this month, customers at the Suhewan Greenland Service Center can have a free cup of coffee made by deaf-mute baristas.

It is a newly-launched charity program by the Beizhan Subdistrict and Jing'an Yilifang Community Service Center.

Recently, local residents were invited to learn sign languages from these special baristas to express “Americano” “double expresso” “latte” and other orders.

The center, at 798 Beisuzhou Road, has an area of nearly 40 square meters. It allows people who walk along the Suzhou Creek to rest, use a toilet and drink tea.

Traditional Chinese culture center

Wei Yang School has opened at the Shimen Road No. 2 Subdistrict Culture Center to promote traditional Chinese culture to locals.

It covers nearly 300 square meters at 1501 Nansuzhou Road, with traditional Chinese culture lectures and experiences such as folk dances and tea ceremonies.

To celebrate its opening, a hanfu (traditional Chinese Han-style attire) fashion show was staged.

Conveying best wishes

Calligraphers have come together at the Shanghai Railway Station to write chunlian(Spring Festival couplets) or the Chinese character “福” meaning “blessings,” for passengers leaving Shanghai to reunite with their families in other places.

It has become a tradition for them to do so ahead of the Chinese New Year to send their best wishes to migrant workers in the city.

Skiing competition

The fourth Jing’an Juniors Ski Competition has been held in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province.

The competition comprised of alpine skiing giant slalom, snowboard giant slalom, snowboard slopestyle and freestyle skiing slopestyle.It was categorized into U8, U10, U12, U13, U14 and U16.

More than 260 young skiers from home and abroad took part in the competition.

Though it rarely snows in the area, Jing'an has been working to promote winter sports such as skiing among children for years.

In 2019, Jing'an established the city's first skiing association. One year later, it formed the city's first teen ski team.

Moreover, Jing'an is promoting winter sports in local schools. Daning International Elementary School, Fenghua Junior Middle School and Fenghua Middle School have been designated to foster budding skiers.
