摄影师曼妠海姆（中文名：马汉达）沙皇骑兵近卫团军官，后来的芬兰军总司令和芬兰总统。1906年3月26—1908年12月21日，他被派遣来到中国境内对大清帝国的北部和西部进行侦查。他从新疆入境，途径甘肃，宁夏，内蒙古，河南，河北，最后到达北京。
