日本统计了二战时学生参军的阵亡率，发现文科生上战场阵亡率大大高于理科生，最高的文学专业阵亡率10.6%，而最低的工科生只有0.3%。
至于理科生为什么生存率很高，可能理科生可以更快的熟练掌握武器操作，很快学会战场生存技巧，更冷静更理性。 工科生可能被优先安排在后方维修装备，被俘后也会被安排到后勤部门，不会被优先送到前线“填坑”。
