王凌出身太原王氏祁县房，东汉司徒王允之侄。举孝廉出身，授发干县令，迁中山太守。颇有政绩，迁司空（曹操）掾属。魏文帝曹丕即位，拜散骑常侍、兖州刺史。参加洞口之战，跟从张辽击败吴将吕范，加号建武将军，封宜城亭侯。
