1905年，一位妇女站在美国密苏里州圣路易斯市的伊兹桥下的密西西比河上。可以看到还有几十个人站在她身后，走过结冰的河流。当密西西比河结冰时，它被人们称为“冰峡谷”。1831年至1938年间，在奥尔顿水闸和大坝建成之前，圣路易斯的河水至少有10次完全冻结。
