Dressed in a military uniform, he is a former soldier in the armed forces who served as an escort; returning to campus, he became a well-round university student who served as the president of the students union; picking up a painting brush, he became a beloved big brother giving creative art lessons to children; stepping into the community, he is an enthusiastic and outspoken young volunteer named Mr. Chen.

近日，中南财经政法大学中韩新媒体学院2019级24岁的陈毅，第三次获评国家奖学金，并首次获得该校最高级别奖学金“文澜奖学金”。

Recently, Chen Yi, a student of the Class 2019 at China-Korea Institute of New Media of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, obtained his third national scholarship, and Wenlan Scholarship, a scholarship of the highest level in universitys the scholarships scheme.

高考后“歇”笔从戎

Starting Army Life after the College Entrance Examination

2017年高考之后的8月，陈毅同时收到了中南财经政法大学的录取通知书和入伍通知书，他却毅然决定先入伍后求学。

After the national exam in August 2017, Chen Yi received both the admission letter from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and the notice of enlistment. Faced with these two options, he finally made the decisive decision to join the army before starting his university life.

在新兵连，他和战友冬天背着五六十斤的行囊行进在千里冰封的大别山，每天徒步行军三四十公里、摩托化行军几百公里。训练时要匍匐在泥地里前进，从地上的碎石碾过，陈毅的手肘浸出了血，又磨出了茧。

As a new recruit, he, together with his comrades, marched forward in the snow-covered Ta-pieh Mountains, carrying nearly 30-kilogram luggage. They marched about 40 kilometers on foot, and rode several hundred kilometers by motorcycle on a daily basis. During the training sessions, they had to crawl on the muddy ground, and roll over gravel. Chens elbows bled from the bruises which overtime became callused.

寒冬拉练、酷暑比武。凭借优异的表现，陈毅被安排执行重大安保任务及涉黑犯罪人员的押送任务。退伍前，陈毅获得了两次优秀义务兵称号和一次部队嘉奖。

After hard training day in and day out, Chen Yi, with his excellent performance, was delegated to execute vital security missions which sometimes included escorting criminals. Prior to leaving the army, he was awarded the Outstanding Compulsory Serviceman twice, and won a certificate of commendation in the troop once.

返校学习并穿上红马甲

Devoting Himself to Volunteer Services on Campus

“他一身军装，在办公室门口敬了个礼，笔直大步走了进来。”中南财经政法大学中韩新媒体学院辅导员黄祯辉老师，对陈毅2019年退伍返校时印象深刻。“他细心热心，同学有事就抢着帮忙，办事特靠谱。”黄老师说，后来陈毅全票当选班干部，又当选了学院的学生干部。

Huang Zhenhui, the teacher in charge of student affairs at the China-Korea Institute of New Media of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law recalled how Chen Yi, dressed in military uniform, gave a salute before walking into the office the first day he returned to the campus from the army in 2019. The scene impressed Mr. Huang and he added, “Chen Yi is very kind, trustworthy and always willing to offer a helping hand.” Receiving the full support of his classmates, Chen was elected as the class monitor, and later a member of the Students Union of their college.

2020年疫情期间，陈毅所在的东湖高新区橘园社区不少居民买药不便，他果断穿上红马甲走上抗疫一线。陈毅和两名大学生组成采药志愿小队，为居民采购药品累计900余次，他们还将患病老人背下楼送医，为困难居民发放物资等。校园宿舍楼被封控，他和学生党员先锋队一起为同学们代取快递、打印学习材料、交作业等。“陈毅热心帮忙，坚持了近半个月，特给力。”电影学专业1902班母棱同学说。

During the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, residents in the Juyuan community of the East Lake High-tech Development Zone in Wuhan had difficulties in purchasing medicine. Therefore, Chen Yi and two other university students volunteered to help residents with purchasing medicine, which they did for over 900 times. Besides distributing aid packages to residents in need, they also carried the sick elderly downstairs and took them to the hospital. When their campus was under lockdown, he, along with other student members of the CPC provided volunteer services including delivering packages, printing study handouts and submitting assignments for other students. Mu Ling, a student from the department of film making, said，“Chen Yi is really warmhearted and his volunteering efforts for almost half a month were of great help to us.”

平时周末，陈毅还会跟着学院师生一起前往学校定点支援的咸宁市通城县红石村设计艺术墙绘，改变乡村风貌。

During the weekends, Chen Yi, together with his teachers and classmates, pays regular visits to Hongshi village in Xianning city, a targeted poverty-alleviation spot, to decorated the village with wall paintings, thus enriching the beauty of the village.

扎进画室以勤补拙逆袭

Developing Professional Competence through Hard Work

陈毅说，返校后重握鼠标与画笔，他感到激动，但第一次专业摸底考试，自己的成绩却垫底了，“可我骨子里不服输的劲头起来了，部队教会了我在逆境中找机会翻盘。”此后他几乎住进了画室，常因为画得太晚被保安赶出来。

Chen Yi said that it was exciting to return to campus and resume his studies in art. However, he found himself in last place in the placement exam. “The exam results evoked my never-give-up spirit which I gained during my time in the army. There is always a chance of change in times of adversity”, he added. From then on, he spent all his time painting in the studio and sometimes had to be told by the guards to leave when it was very late at night.

同学母棱告诉极目新闻记者，陈毅每天总比大家早到教学楼，别人5小时画完的期末作业，他反复打磨30多个小时细细勾勒。最终他以95分的期末成绩，跃居年级第一。他还连续三次获得了国家奖学金，以及今年的文澜奖学金和硕士研究生的推免资格。

Mu Ling, his classmate, said that Chen Yi is always the first one to arrive in the classroom. His meticulous care to detail means that he often spends more than 30 hours polishing his painting when others may only spend 5 hours finishing the task. Consequently, Chen Yi became he top student after earning excellent grades in the final examinations. He won national scholarships for three consecutive years, the Wenlan Scholarship and qualified for an exemption in the postgraduate admission examination.

学习之余，陈毅还积极参加各类科研竞赛，先后取得了三十项省级校级荣誉，参与创作的动画电影《豌豆八哥》去年在全国电影剧本备案立项。

In his spare time, Chen Yi also actively participated in research and competitions; and has won a total of 30 awards in competitions at both university and provincial levels. He also joined the production of “Sports Genius”, an animated film, listed in the film scripts in China last year.

义务给社区的孩子上课

Volunteering to Teach Children in the Community

“寒暑假期间，社区很多孩子是老人带，活动条件有限，我就用专业所长带一部分小朋友做手工、上艺术课。”陈毅说，得知有大学生志愿者给孩子们上艺术课，社区的孩子抢着来体验，他忙不过来，就回学校联系组建了“艺中南”志愿服务队，把同学们也请来社区。志愿服务队一干就是两年多，目前累计覆盖7个社区，已给300余名孩子上过美育课。

“During the winter and summer vacations, many children in the community are looked after by the elderly and have very limited choice of entertainment. So I make full use of my speciality and give lessons in arts and crafts to children.” Chen Yi said. Learning of free lessons in arts and crafts provided by university students, children scrambled for the classes. Chen Yi was too busy to deal with the growing number of children joining the class. Turning to the university, he soon organized a team of volunteer teachers, named “Yi Zhongnan”, and invited them to join the voluntary teaching in the community. It has been more than two years since they started their voluntary teaching. Up to now, the team of volunteer teachers has served seven communities where over 300 children have attended their classes.

如今陈毅即将本科毕业，“艺中南”志愿服务队也由最初的7人壮大到30多人。陈毅说：“接力棒交到了值得信赖的师兄师弟手中，希望志愿队能发展壮大下去。我也会回归团队继续参与服务。”

Chen Yi is about to graduate with a bachelors degree and his team of volunteer teachers, “Yi Zhongnan” has grown from seven teachers to more than 30 teachers. He said, “the baton has been passed on to my trustworthy schoolmates. It is my sincere hope that our team continues to grow and I will spare time to join them even after I graduate.”
