北平沦陷后，普通人的处境十分可怜，在这种恶劣的生活环境下，疾病长期与北平人相伴。据不完全统计，那时的北平街头每天因为冻饿和疾病而死的“倒卧”(即老北京话中对于街上饿殍的称呼)就多达300余人。
