日本共同社消息，6日，日本北海道今年的商业捕鲸正式开始，捕鲸船队在鄂霍次克海近海捕获了1头小须鲸。日本水产厅称，今年日本全国计划捕获133头小须鲸。2019年6月30日，日本正式退出国际捕鲸委员会，并于同年7月1日，时隔31年重新开始商业捕鲸。
