日前，宁波诺丁汉大学任命吴韬教授为副校长，分管诺丁汉大学卓越灯塔计划（宁波）创新研究院，他将于明天正式履新，专门推动此高能级研究院的建设发展。同时，他将充分利用他卓越的领导能力和丰富的中英工作经验，汇聚世界一流科技人才资源，助力宁波诺丁汉大学向新型国际化研究型大学转型。

作为赋能宁波高质量发展的又一重要引擎，诺丁汉大学卓越灯塔计划（宁波）创新研究院由宁波市人民政府与英国诺丁汉大学合作共建。今年5月，研究院正式在宁波国家高新区入驻启动。

宁诺理工“领航人”再担重任，
撬动中英创新资源
不久之前，宁波市与英国诺丁汉市签署了第二个友好交流合作五年发展规划协议书。两市友好关系更进一步。协议中特别提到双方将共同推动英国诺丁汉大学“卓越灯塔”计划实施建设，吸引全球顶尖人才及团队来甬发展。
英国诺丁汉大学的“卓越灯塔”计划旨在集结顶尖人才和国际化优质科技资源，探索全球面临的关键问题并找出解决方案，迄今已组织超过300个研究团队，汇聚了全球高水平的研究人员以及跨学科团队，取得了重要进展和影响。
吴韬教授在英国诺丁汉大学有近7年的学习工作经历，建立了丰富的科研人脉资源网络。他在任理工学院院长期间，引领数个重大科研项目、重点实验室、重点学科和重点科研平台的建设，整合诺丁汉大学的全球创新资源，开展高水平国际化博士生的联合培养，网罗全球高端人才汇聚宁诺开展科研合作、推动学术交流。

在他引领下，宁诺拿下20余个国家级/省级一流本科课程，5个专业获评省一流本科专业建设点。工程科学学科进入ESI全球排名前0.5%，8个工程类本科专业均获得国际权威专业认证。
吴韬教授的任命也彰显着诺丁汉大学全球大家庭给予研究院的厚望，希望在他的带领下，能够充分发挥诺丁汉大学的创新优势，同时助力宁波诺丁汉大学向新型国际化研究型大学转型。
吴教授强大的科研背景，卓越的管理能力，以及在本土对接、国际合作上的丰富经验，让他成为这一重要平台掌舵者的不二人选。相信在他的引领下，研究院能够成为一个‘支点’，撬动中英创新资源。”
宁波诺丁汉大学执行校长尼克·迈尔斯教授表达了对吴韬教授新头衔的热烈祝贺，及学校将一如既往全力支持研究院的发展。学校科研与知识交流副校长周荫强教授也表示，吴韬教授曾一手建立了多个极为成功的科研中心，是当之无愧的研究院的新掌舵人。学校也将集聚科研力量将研究院打造成中国领先、世界一流的研究中心。
如何撬动中英创新资源，吴韬教授心中已有蓝图——引进英国的优势学科资源、整合诺丁汉大学全球家庭的优质尖端科技人才，并将全球相关科研资源、人才汇集至研究院。围绕研究院聚焦的三大重点科研领域智能制造、绿色化学与能源、生命健康展开科研攻坚，他还着力引进诺丁汉大学的尖端科研“未来食品”团队。他表示，英国诺丁汉大学在未来食品研究领域处于世界前沿。研究院拟建立智慧食品实验室，在健康食品、健康城市等领域展开相关科研攻坚，依托英国诺丁汉大学和宁波诺丁汉大学的优势学科领域，构建一个独特的跨学科科研平台，服务宁波“甬有健康”工程，立足本土、服务全球食品行业。

聚焦宁波产业优势和布局，
助推宁波高质量发展
17年前，中国第一所中外合作大学落地宁波，开创了中国高等教育与国外优质高等教育资源相结合的先河。
在今年5月诺丁汉大学卓越灯塔计划（宁波）创新研究院的入驻启动仪式上，浙江省委常委、宁波市委书记彭佳学在致辞中表示宁波诺丁汉大学是习近平总书记主政浙江期间，亲自指导推动建立的中国第一所具有独立法人资格的中外合作大学。17年来，在国家有关部委和省市各级各方面的大力支持下，在英国诺丁汉大学的精心帮助下，宁波诺丁汉大学发展迅速、成绩突出、为培养国际化专业人才、促进中英文化教育交流合作作出了积极贡献。
彭佳学在致辞中还指出，“我们愿与英国有关方面持续深化各领域交流合作，不断开辟互学互鉴、互惠互利的新境界。”
研究院入驻启动
17年后，诺丁汉大学卓越灯塔计划（宁波）创新研究院再次落地宁波，充分彰显了世界名校诺丁汉大学看好中国、看好宁波，以及宁波跨国跨地域寻求创新合作，实现高质量发展的决心。
在吴韬看来，研究院将始终把更好地服务地方社会经济、助推宁波高质量发展作为自身的使命，以及前进的澎湃动力。他透露，研究院聚焦的三大重点科研领域与宁波正在大力建设的“246”万千亿产业集群紧密契合。比如，对应宁波的“医疗健康”产业，近期研究院正在积极引进和搭建人工智能赋能化学药物研发团队。团队核心技术有望大幅度缩短计算研发周期。
此外，研究院入驻启动仅半年时间，已经引进了一批专家学者，产生了一批科研成果，取得了良好开端。研究院一直大力推进全球引才，目前第一批八位专家已陆续到岗，他们来自英国、意大利、新加坡、马来西亚等国家。首批十个科研团队已入驻，其中，“资源循环和节能减排技术”团队将与布勒中国共同开发涡旋流在食品加工设备上的应用，团队研发的木塑料回收技术也于近日与宁波当地工业企业签订了技术转化合作协议。
“希望在新的阶段，积极探索研究院与政府、产业及社会的合作新模式，构建高校教育链、人才链、产业链、创新链有机衔接的创新生态系统，为宁波诺丁汉大学建设成为新型国际化研究型大学，提供内生动力。”吴韬说。
New research expert to lead China Beacons Institute
Professor Tao Wu will take on a new role as Vice Provost for the China Beacons Institute (CBI) at University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), effective from 1 January 2022. He will be focusing on the construction of CBI, utilising his strong leadership skills and international experience to introduce world-class resources to support its development.
Professor Wu has spent approximately seven years working and studying at the University of Nottingham, during which he has established a substantial network and academic connections. During his tenure as Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering (FoSE), he has introduced high-end talent to the faculty in the areas of new materials and intelligent manufacturing, and more than 50% of the academic papers of the FoSE are published in the top 10% journals of SCI.
Looking forward to his new role, Professor Wu said: “The China Beacons Institute is a key example of UK-China cooperation, at the forefront of future-oriented, world-changing research. I look forward to working with CBI colleagues and continuing this work.”
Professor Wu plans to first introduce the innovative research and industry resources from the UK community, integrating them with the high-quality and future-facing scientific and technological talent of the University of Nottingham global community. Meanwhile, focusing the three main research areas of CBI on smart manufacturing, green chemicals and energy, and life science and healthcare, he is now concentrating on introducing the cutting-edge scientific research team “Future Food” from the University of Nottingham to CBI. Professor Wu explained that the institute hopes to establish laboratories in the field to conduct research into sustainable food and healthy urban living - backed by the resources of University of Nottingham UK - to provide a unique interdisciplinary research platform to serve the local and global food industry.
In Professor Wu's view, CBI will always place emphasis on serving the local area and economy, with boosting the high-quality development of Ningbo at the forefront of its goals. He added that the three key areas of research focus for CBI are closely consistent with the "246" industrial cluster in Ningbo, and that CBI has recently introduced eight globally recruited experts and scholars and ten research teams.
"As we move into a new year, CBI will actively explore cooperation with institutes, government, industry and the society to build an innovative system, and provide endogenous power to build upon University of Nottingham’s research credentials," Professor Wu concluded.
Provost Nick Miles said of the appointment: “Congratulations to Professor Tao Wu as he takes the helm at the China Beacons Institute. His strong research background and passion for civic and global engagement will stand the important work of the CBI in good stead. We look forward to seeing the work of the Institute continue under Professor Wu.”
UNNC Vice-Provost for Research & Knowledge Exchange, Professor Patrick Chau, also paid tribute: “with Professor Wu’s vast experiences in building successful research centres, it is no doubt that he is the best colleague to be the new director of CBI and lead it to be one of the best world-class research centres in China.”
About CBI
As a key institution that enables the high-quality development of Ningbo, CBI has been jointly established by the Ningbo government and the University of Nottingham, as part of the “Beacons of Excellence” scheme initiated by University of Nottingham UK.
Aiming to incorporate top talent in multiple areas and international scientific research resources to explore the critical problems facing the world and find solutions, the Beacons project has gathered more than 300 research teams, including numerous world-renowned researchers and various interdisciplinary teams, and has made significant progress and impact around the globe. Among these projects, CBI has selected key ones in line with Ningbo strategic and industrial goals as an international platform to serve the local development.
Last May, the Institute launched at its interim location in the Ningbo National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone. Jiaxue Peng, Standing Committee member of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee and secretary of the Ningbo Municipal Party Committee, attended the launch ceremony of CBI and noted in his speech that UNNC is the first Sino-foreign university with independent legal standing approved and established during President Xi’s administration in Zhejiang, and has developed rapidly with remarkable achievements in the past 17 years. “We hope to deepen communication and cooperation in different fields with UK and continuously seek for betterment for both parties in the future.”
