太抱歉了，上周因为忙得连轴转，实在抽不开身写文章，让大家久等了！
作为国内最知名的女性成功企业家代表之一，董明珠在前几日的一场活动中向媒体介绍自己年仅 22 岁的女秘书孟羽童，并直言：「我希望她能在我身边， 我要把她培养成第二个董明珠。」
一夜之间，孟羽童的账号涌入百万关注者。大家纷纷猜测：这个年轻的女孩是什么来头呢？孟羽童，毕业于浙江大学 2017 级西班牙语专业本科，民族舞达到 10 级水准。
2021 年初，董明珠加入综艺《初入职场的我们》，在众多人选之中，她认为孟羽童胆大心细，敢于表现自己，对她大加赞赏。
在孟羽童身上，董明珠或许也看到了曾经的自己。当年，丈夫早逝，为了养家糊口，她把年仅几岁的孩子托付给自己的父母亲友，只身在外打拼。《纽约时报》做过一期董明珠的专访，我们一起回到她曾经的岁月。
02 董明珠的「强势」

有哪些表示「强势」的花样表达？
01 tough
tough 这个形容词想必大家见过很多次，不过，它的词义很丰富，构成的搭配也多，我们可能只是了解了一些皮毛而已。tough 不仅可以用来描述一件任务非常「棘手的」，可替换 difficult ，还可以形容人。而且，用它形容人的时候，既可以用作褒义，表示「坚强的，坚韧的」，也可以用作贬义，表示「粗暴的」。
When they were handing out kids they gave her the toughest one.
上天发孩子时 ，给了她最坚强的一个。
02 steely
steely 对应的名词是哪个呢？没错，去掉 y 就是它的名词了—— steel 。steel 表示「钢铁」，非常坚硬，所以，steely 用来形容一个人「坚决的，强硬的」。文中的 steely resolve 指的是「钢铁般的决心」。
03 play hardball
或者，我们也可以用一个动词词组来描述。 hardball 原本指「棒球运动」，后来引申为「果敢，强硬手段」，与 play 连用。下面这个词典例句用来形容像董明珠一样拼杀在商场的女性再合适不过。

语法分析
大家有没有发现，为什么冒号后面的三个句子都是以 that 开头呢？而且这些句子后面也没见有主句？
这是因为作者省略啦。

首句作者提到 Stories swirl around Ms. Dong 「围绕董明珠的传闻有很多」，究竟有哪些传闻呢，接下来作者就开始举例子了，而且一连举了三个例子。为了节约笔墨，作者就把一些反复出现的词给省略掉了。哪几个词反复出现呢？ A story goes that… 这是一个固定搭配，表示「据说」，我们看个例句。
The story goes that this castle was founded by a renowned architect.
据说这座城堡由一位著名建筑师建造而成。
swirl around
swirl 指的是 to move around quickly in a circle; to make sth do this「旋转」这个动作。后用来指传闻、信息等「流传」。
fall out with sb
这个短语的意思是 to have an argument with sb so that you are no longer friendly with them「与某人闹翻」，所以现在你知道「跟人闹掰了」该怎么用英文表达了，对不对？
另外，fall out 还可以表示头发、牙齿等「脱落」，所以，我们也知道「掉头发」该怎么说啦。比如， 2014 年的四级完形 中有这样一句话。
They have nerves and blood vessels. Diseased teeth can cause pain, die and fall out.
牙齿遍布神经和血管，坏掉的牙齿可能会导致疼痛、坏死，然后脱落。
franchise
franchise 兼有动词、名词两种词性，作名词时，指「特许经营权」。这个故事和事实有点出入，董明珠的哥哥要的不是特许经营权，是当时格力空调非常火，有的经销商以 3% 的提成找到董明珠亲哥，希望他能帮自己优先拿货。董明珠果断拒绝哥哥的要求后，被踢出族谱，兄妹二人断交。
03 董明珠的「传奇」
“I don’t see myself as especially brave,” she said. “I just thought I’d like to do it.” For four years, she worked as an air-conditioner saleswoman, traveling widely. Sent to a poor province, Anhui, she produced one-eighth of Gree’s annual sales, catching the attention of Zhu Jianghong, Gree’s first general manager, now chairman of the board. nurture your talent
nurture 原来表示「培养」植物等，后来词义扩大化，用来表示 to help sb / sth to develop and be successful「扶持；帮助；支持」某人、某计划等。我们看个《经济学人》例句。

英国一直都想培育自己规模小但高精尖的太空产业，而 OneWeb 理论上算是英国公司。

talent spotter
spot 表示「发现」，所以 spotter 是「发现者」， talent spotter 常用来指「星探」。不过呢，在这儿我们译为「星探」不太合适，因为董明珠不是明星艺人。我们译为「伯乐」更适合。
merchandise upfront
merchandise 是「商品」。比如，最近很火的玲娜贝儿玩偶属于「正版迪士尼商品」，用英文来表达就是 a kind of official Disney merchandise 。
upfront 作形容词表示「坦率的」，这条释义想必有同学知道，常用搭配是 be upfront about sth，我们可以拿它来替换 honest，或者 frank。但这里的 upfront 指的是「预交的」，比如，双十一大战的一种活动叫「预付款」，就跟它有关。比如， an upfront fee of ￥50 ，指的是「50 元的预付款」。
take on bank debt
take on 的意思很多，在这儿表示「承担」，所以，take on bank debt 指的是「承担银行债务」，也就是「向银行借贷」。
entice

我们之前在吴亦凡被刑拘这篇文章中学过三个表示「吸引」的动词，大家还记得不？分别是 entice，lure，seduce ，详情戳这里哦 。
拓展内容：enticing
entice 的对应形容词是 enticing，表示 something that is enticing attracts or interests you a lot「诱人的；有吸引力的」，昨天刚巧在写作训练营的范文中讲到这个单词。
A prospective premium of about 30 per cent on their initial investment is enticing.
初始投资 30% 左右的预期溢价非常具有诱惑力。
abnormal
这个形容词可是四六级的常客，曾出现在 2016 年四级的完形填空中，而它就是选项之一。ab- 这个前缀常表示否定意义，normal 是「正常的」，所以，abnormal 是「不正常的，反常的」或者「变态的」，比如， abnormal behaviour 是「反常行为」。在文中， abnormal game principle 指的是「不正常的游戏规则」，或者我们可以译为「畸形的游戏规则」。
My parents thought it was abnormal for a boy to be interested in ballet.
我父母认为一个男孩子对芭蕾舞感兴趣不正常。
follow through sth
金牌写作用语
这个词组看上去不起眼，但使用频率很高，而且很适合用在我们的写作中，follow through sth 意思是 to finish sth that you have started「把某事进行到底，执行下去」。
The leadership has been unwilling to follow through the implications of these ideas.
领导层不愿意对这些想法的含意进行深入探究。
04 董明珠对女性的期望
Her attitude toward female success is simple: Women need to compete head-on with men. “You must be a thinker. Be decisive, have good judgment, organizational ability. Most importantly, you have to be able to take control,” she said. “What kind of victory is it where you are given privileges, or where you play on your gender?”

head-on 原本指的是两辆汽车「迎面相撞」，后来引申为 to deal with it in a direct and determined way 解决问题等「积极地，认真地」。经常和几个动词构成搭配，如 tackle sth head-on 「积极解决问题」， face the problem head-on 「直面问题」。在这儿，董明珠的意思是女性和男性必须「正面竞争」，不要利用性别优势。
play on your gender
银牌写作用语
play on sth 可以替换我们常用的 take advantage of sth ，因为它的意思是 to use a feeling, fact, or idea in order to get what you want「利用」别人的感情、恐惧等。这个词组往往用于贬义。
