It was a summer night. The moon shone brightly, playing hide and seek with us through the clouds and windows.
"Did you know the moon used to be a bird? And it was a bird with only one wing. Long ago, the world had all sorts of birds. There were birds with one wing, with two, with three..."
"Birds with four wings, birds with five and six wings."
"That's right, there were birds with one wing and there were birds with nine wings. But no birds had ten or more wings. You know why? Because the birds with ten or more wings couldn't control their flight. They couldn't control so many wings all at once, and all those wings made them fly too quickly, so they would often crash into rocks and die. For a while, under the highest cliff, there were so many birds that crashed and died that the bodies of the birds formed a big hill. The people who passed by could always hear the birds flapping their wings, so they named it the Flapping Hill.”
“So you see, for a very long time there were all kinds of birds in the world, from birds with one wing all the way up to birds with nine wings. “
The more wings the birds had, the faster they could fly. Now, think about a bird with only one wing, how difficult it is for it to fly. But a bird with nine wings can flap its wings once and fly really far.
Do you know how a bird with one wing can fly?"
“It would flap its wing really hard… and then it could only fly a little bit.”
“Yes. Often it’s actually stuck on the ground running, flapping its wing with all its might, trying to take off from the ground. It thinks it’s flying, but compared to other birds, it’s just hopping around on the ground. It’s like a hurdle jumper, but not even as fast.
“And also,it is very hard for a bird with one wing to run or fly in a straight line. This is because it’s not well balanced, so having too few wings leads to the same problem as having too many wings. You could see it careening through the air. At first it could barely stay in the air for three seconds, before it fell down…”
“The best flyer in the world is coming! Make way!” the other birds would laugh at the clumsy, struggling bird with one wing.
“He's so pitiful.”
“No, he doesn’t feel miserable.”
“Oh look, the moon is hiding again!”
“Yes, he'll come back out again in a while.”
“Isn't he wingless? ”
“No, he has one wing.”
The bird with one wing didn’t feel bad or get discouraged. He didn’t seem to care about the others making fun of him. He didn’t care if he looked ugly while flying, but just kept fighting to get where he wanted to go.
While the other birds were asleep or resting, he didn’t sleep and didn’t rest. He never stopped and never gave up flapping its solitary wing. He kept trying to find different ways to fly. Finally, he figured out the best way to fly. He spun his one wing around and around in the air, like this… he had finally learned to fly like a helicopter.
Finally he could hover in the air, and even fly higher and higher. The bird was so excited, what a wonderful feeling it is to fly! The bird was so happy that he didn’t want to stop flying, He didn’t want to come down ever again. He just wanted to keep spinning his wing, flying higher and higher. And higher and higher…
“He flew away from the Earth!”
“Yes, he reached the clouds and the stars.”
The clouds and the stars were amazed and shouted to each other, “wow, look at this bird! It can fly so high, and so beautifully!”
They danced around the bird in excitement and shone their light on him.
The bird with one wing was dizzy with happiness.
But then something terrifying happened.
A loud rumble came from deep within the Earth underneath them, and suddenly the whole planet fell away, deep into space!
So the bird with one wing did not return to Earth. He became the moon in the sky.
From the ground you can only see the light that the stars shone upon the bird. You can’t see his wing, because the wing is always pointed away from us, spinning away where we can’t see it.
