伦敦地铁是世界上第一条地下铁道。总长超过400千米。
伦敦地铁现已建成12条，总长度超过400公里的线路网，有160余公里的线路位于隧道内。
伦敦地铁在战争时期曾被用作地下掩体。二战期间，每晚平均有6万居民进入隧道，最多时达17.7万余人。
随着城市的发展，几乎所有的地铁线路都建设了延长线。
