爵本就是鸟雀之义。基本都是三足，前流后尾而有持，束腰深腹，上立两柱。后来演变很多，不再详述。
爵本是礼器。礼器分酒器，食器，水器，乐器。而古礼重神。酒是通神之祭品。所以酒不是一般人任意时候都应该喝的。而是在祭祀燕礼等场合才应饮用的。
