An Impromptu Poem

（Zhu Xi of Song Dynasty)

A young man can be old easily, but to accomplish a study is difficult. Therefore, time is precious and should not be neglected. While you are in the dream of spring grasses beside the pond without alertness, the fallen leaves of Chinese parasols in front of the ladders remind us that autumn has already come.

My sole favourite is the nature of water-lily. It rises from the slimy muds but never to be stained. It floats on the clean waves but never to be enchanting. It has stems with emptiness inside and straight outside .It has neither spreading nor branching. It's perfume spreads far but becomes more pure .It silently rests in an elegant state. You are allowed to watch it from a far distance but should not play it with contempt.
